AIDS
Awareness Week:
A week of activities and programming focused on World AIDS Day, aimed
at highlighting progress made in the battle against the epidemic, while
at the same time reminding people how much still needs to be accomplished.
(first week of December)
Alternative Gift Fair: Just in time
for the holidays, you can give a monetary donation to a local non-profit
in the name of your friends and family.
Alternative Spring Break: Based on
current pressing issues, Alternative Spring Breaks are student initiated,
organized and led. This year one trip will focus on working with AIDS
organizations in San Francisco and another will spotlight issues of sexual
and domestic violence in Portland.
Blood Donation: The College holds
two blood drives each year (October 28th and February 19th), with the
goal for each drive to collect 100 pints of blood for the Red Cross. In
addition, CSAW will send a van to the local Red Cross on a monthly basis
throughout the academic year.
Community Service Federal Work-Study: There are more than 30
off-campus community service Federal Work-Study positions available to
eligible students at one of 15 public or non-profit agencies in Portland.
Environmental Service Opportunities:
Tree plantings, trail maintenance and environmental clean-ups will take
place throughout the year. Look for sign-ups for these projects in the
CSAW office.
Fall Break with Habitat for Humanity:
Join a group of your fellow students in a weekend-long home building project
in central Oregon.
Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week: Help plan or just take
part in a week of activities to raise awareness of poverty issues in Portland.
Operation Nightwatch: Spend a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday
evening at a downtown hospitality center for Portland's homeless.
Potluck in the Park: One or two Sundays
each month a group of LC students serves a meal with Potluck, a small
grass roots organization run completely by volunteers. Potluck provides
a meal every Sunday for those in need.
Saturday in Service (and Sunday, too):
Take part in one-time service opportunities with a variety of local organizations.
Spanish Speaking Opportunities: Use
language skills to help native Spanish speakers develop confidence in
English and other subjects.
Start Making a Reader Today (SMART): Read with elementary age
kids for an hour each week as a volunteer in this nationally recognized
literacy program. SMART is always looking for volunteers who speak languages
other than English.
Sunnyside Family Shelter: Lewis &
Clark students serve as hosts at this small family shelter in Southeast
Portland.
Voter Registration: Voter registration
cards are available in CSAW. CSAW also organizes events on campus to inform
students of current election topics.
Women's Intercommunity AIDS Resource (WIAR):
Help provide childcare and other assistance to this women's support network.
