MichaelDK: Hi. I'm here and will be chatting with you in just a moment. Just hang on. Thanks
LiaGst9 joined the room.
TatianaGst5 joined the room.
MichaelDK: Hi LIa. You found my office. Congrats.
MichaelDK: Hi Tatiana.
MichaelDK waves
LiaGst9: Yes, this is much cooler than I thought it would be
MichaelDK: So you didn't expect cool.
MichaelDK smiles
GloriaGst11 joined the room.
MichaelDK: Hi Gloria. Welcome
TatianaGst5: Hi, Lia and Michael! I'm here at last:)
MichaelDK: Tatiana, welcome to my Elista colleague!
LiaGst9: Well, its got more interactive features than I imagined (like the doorways). I thought it would be something like the old email systems we had in college. I forgot what they were called but you could "finger" individuals and see who else was online.
GloriaGst11: Hi Michael, Tatiana. Finally got in and am happy to be here
MichaelDK: Oh Lia, you are showing your age. I thought I was old to remember "finger"
MichaelDK: Perhaps we should say where we are each from in case people don't remember.
LiaGst9: Yeah I know. The first time I used the internet in college I had to use "gother"
MichaelDK: Gopher.
MichaelDK chuckles
LiaGst9: yeah. thanks. Okay, well I'm from Portland, OR and I teach 8th grade science
LiaGst9: Is this the whiteboard that we are using right now?
MichaelDK: Tatiana and Gloria? Want to tell where you are from?
TatianaGst5: Ok. I'm from Elista, Kalmykia and I teach Pratical English course for students whgo's major is English and Kalmyk
MichaelDK: No, this is the chat feature. But the whiteboard is available. Remind me and we can try it.
GloriaGst11: Okay, I'm Gloria Kismadi, and I live in Indonesia. I teach at a small teacher's college which I enjoy very much and I am also a consultant for the writing of English teaching materials at a private English course in Jakarta. It's the largest English course and is in 54 locations all over Indonesia. My job as a consultant means going over the materials, and working with the materials writers. I enjoy that too.
LiaGst9: How long have you been a consultant, Gloria?
MichaelDK: It's 10PM (22:00) here in Portland. How about where you are?
GloriaGst11: For the last 5 years.
GloriaGst11: It's about 5 minutes past 12 noon in Jakarta.
TatianaGst5: It's 9 AM in Elista
LiaGst9: Michael, what kinds of activities/assiagnments do you use chats for? Also have you done these with teenagers?
MichaelDK: Tatiana, did we meet in Elista when I was there?
GloriaGst11: Chatting is always somewhat of a miracle to me. Here I am in Jakarft "talking" with all of you. I think it's awesome!
MichaelDK: Lia, I've used this chat at Tapped In for a kind of "office hour" where students can chat with me.
MichaelDK nods. .. awesome
MichaelDK: I've also used chat with student to do a type of role play where students take on characters in a novel they've read.
TatianaGst5: Yes, do you remember the Buddist temple tour? I also attended your workshops
MichaelDK: Yes, of course I remember the Bhuddist temple tour. It was great, though hard to wake up because we had such a nice time toasting at the dinner the night before!
LiaGst9: I am trying to image how I could use this in my classroom, but I keep getting stuck on the fact that I generally an average of 30 students. That seems like a lot to be chatting at once? Have you done it with those numbers before?
GloriaGst11: I use chat a lot since I've embarked on a project of writing a biography with a friend wo lives in Sacramento. The chat mode gives us the opportunity to compare notes and edit and things like that. Just two years ago, I think it would not have been possible.
MichaelDK: Lia, I would do the chat in sesssions with smaller numbers of students.
LiaGst9: Gloria and Tatiana are either of you familiar with programs like msn messenger or google chat?
TatianaGst5: Yes, I know about them but I've never used them
GloriaGst11: The most common form of chat in Indonesia is the Yahoo messenger and I think everyone uses that. I haven't tried Google chat, though.
TatianaGst5 left the room (signed off).
MichaelDK: How about Skype? Have any of you use it or know about it.
TatianaGst5 joined the room.
LiaGst9: My sister used skype to talk to my mom when she was in Africa, but I have never used it.
MichaelDK: Skype is free and allows text, voice and video chat, all for free.
LiaGst9: Its where you can make calls online right?
GloriaGst11: I've heard about it and have been encouraged to use it because "It's free". But I haven't tried it.
MichaelDK: It's very simple to download and use.
MichaelDK: My wife and I have a WEb cam (cost = $39 US)
MichaelDK: We can talk to and see our grandkids in Hungary several times per week.
GloriaGst11: Maybe my friend and I should use Skype instead since we use voice a lot. It's easier to argue when you talk. Typing takes up time.
MichaelDK: They are all with us here in Portland now and when they came, it was like we were old freinds even though we had not been physically together for a year!
MichaelDK: If any of you would like to download Skype and call me, just let m know and we could give it a try.
MichaelDK: You do need a decent internet connection.
MichaelDK: And it helps to have a set of headphones to avoid feedback of voices.
MichaelDK: Gloria, you and your friend in Sacramento should give it a try.
WiwikGst14 joined the room.
MichaelDK: Hi Wiwik!
GloriaGst11: I think I'll do that. Internet connection is pretty good, at least in Jakarta. So I may just look into Skype.
WiwikGst14: How are you?
MichaelDK: We are all well.
TatianaGst5: Hi, Wiwik.
WiwikGst14: Hi All,
GloriaGst11: And enjoying each other's company on Chat. Welcome Wiwik.
MichaelDK: By the way, I use Tapped In instead of other chat sites because of the extra free benefits you have if you sign up as a member here.
WiwikGst14: Hi all, hope you are fine
LiaGst9: what are these benefits?
MichaelDK: As you can see, you get a virtual office with the ability to post links and use an interactive white board.
MichaelDK: You can invite students to come to your office to chat just as I have. You can chat here with anyone you like.
LiaGst9: Do you need to pay to sign up or is it free?
MichaelDK: But also, Tapped In has a full schedule of educational workshops
MichaelDK: It's free.
MichaelDK: Once you sign up, you'll get a notice each month with the calendar of events.
WiwikGst14 left the room (signed off).
MichaelDK: When you arrive at the "reception" you can just navigate to where the different presentations occur.
LiaGst9: what do you mean by presentations?
LiaGst9: oh, do you mean the workshops?
WiwikGst16 joined the room.
MichaelDK: There are chats like this with a presenter who has content to provide to an audience.
MichaelDK: You can present links for the audience to look at.
MichaelDK: I've lead a few workshops here.
GloriaGst11: I think that's neat.
MichaelDK: For example, I could show you a Web site in this way: http://www.lclark.edu/~krauss/russiaweb2005/wrworkshop/wrimagesfareast2007.html
MichaelDK: You as the audience could look at the Web site, then return to the chat to discuss it.
WiwikGst16: Hallo Tatiana check it down our websitehttp://buddygroup3.wetpaint.com/ let's share ideas. this web can be seen by everybody else but just member of Buddy 3 could add or edit, thas fun!
MichaelDK: That's just an examle
GloriaGst11: I've been using the computer for a long time now, but finding out how much there is at our fingertips is really mind-boggling. I wish I had more time to really explore. There are so many things I want to look into
TatianaGst5 left the room (signed off).
LiaGst9: The amount of resources out there on the internet turns me off sometimes. Its too overwhelming. Especially some of those clearinghouse sites that just have so many activites and lessons and options to choose from.
TatianaGst5 joined the room.
MichaelDK: Yes, information overload is definitely an issue.
WiwikGst16: Is it Lia Cunningham?
MichaelDK: Wiwik, I see you have set up a Wiki. Nice job trying new things out. I had not hear of Wetpaint--there are new tools every single day!
LiaGst9: Yep
MichaelDK: By the way, do you guys see the pull-down menu in the top right corner of this window--says Actions. . .
WiwikGst16: Lia you are our buddys so please lend your had to fill it in our Website
MichaelDK: Click on the arrow and choose "detatch". You'll get a bigger screen to do this chat.
WiwikGst16: Yes Michael I can see that Tatiana left the roomchat
MichaelDK: Another nice thing about being a member of Tapped In is that as a member, you will get a transcript emailed to you of any chat you had
MichaelDK: Another nice thing about being a member

MichaelDK joined the room.
LiaGst9: I am signing into the buddy group right now
MichaelDK: Oops, I lost you guys. I'm back.
WiwikGst16: Michael what is the big Bowl of our course?
LiaGst9: One of the challenges I am facing with the buddy group is that since I don't teach ESL I am not sure what to contribute
MichaelDK: As I mentioned, if you sign up to be a member of Tapped In, you'll get transcripts of any chat you do. They email it to you.
WiwikGst16: Eventhoug all of your guidelines is a big bowl to me:-))
MichaelDK: For the EFL teachers, this provides a lot of raw materials (student's writing) to work with.
TatianaGst5: I'm sorry, I was helping Bakul to enter chat she has some problems.
MichaelDK: Lia, yes I try to make the course applicable to all disciplines. . .
MichaelDK: But as a Buddy with the ESL/EFL teachers, you would need to focus on topics that are relevant to all teachers
LiaGst9: No I think the course is very applicable, I am just challenged by the Buddy group to give contribution to the discussion
MichaelDK: You do have many issues in common.
MichaelDK: Rights, I understand.
WiwikGst16: It's Okay Lia. Because I mentioned we have different background and you can posted anything that could help another with good things
LiaGst9: well, I also teach much younger students
MichaelDK: Perhaps you could deal with some educational issues affecting teens since several of you teach teens.
LiaGst9: it seems, maybe not
MichaelDK: Tatiana, does Bakul need help getting in?
WiwikGst16: So, please do not hesitate to go to our Website that I mentioned above
TatianaGst5: I think the problem is with Java.
MichaelDK: Yes, could be. Maybe Bakul will have to download Java and try another session.
MichaelDK: Are there any questions about the course? Or things I can help with?
WiwikGst16: Tatiana are you still there? we are waiting your contribution in this website as ours, am I correct Michael?
TatianaGst5: Wiwik could you please write the web site Buddy group again
LiaGst9: I have the webstie open in another window as I write this
MichaelDK: Here is the Wiki that Wiwik mentioned:
MichaelDK: http://buddygroup3.wetpaint.com/?t=anon
TatianaGst5: Bakul is tring to download it
WiwikGst16: You see that's still plain.. need your help guys,..
MichaelDK: With a name like Wiwik, it's no wonder Wikis are attractive to her.
MichaelDK smiles
GloriaGst11: I like your sense of humor!
MichaelDK: By the way, PBWiki is about the easiest way to post a Web site that I know of.
WiwikGst16: thank you Michael but My buddys is impotant but I'm not
LiaGst9: Wiwiks are new to me. I am having trouble figuring out its navigation, but it looks good.
MichaelDK: It's free. I'm designing another course on Web 2.0 tools and I'll be using PBWiki for my main teaching platform.
MichaelDK: Wikis allow users to co-create pages. I set one up for a men's group I belong to.
LiaGst9: what do you mean by "web 2.0"?
MichaelDK: For example, we wanted to write a charter for the group and the member could all go in and edit the charter until we got a form we could agree on.
WiwikGst16: you just click on 'easy edit' with pencil picture, try it..wud be fun
MichaelDK: Web 2.0 refers to all the collaborative Web tools that are out there now.
ChikileGst12 joined the room.
GloriaGst11: I read everything that's coming out here and ask myself what teachers ever did before computers. There's so much more that can be done now . . and it encourages students to do things on their own. All the fun and exciting things can only encourage them to work on their own.
WiwikGst16: btw Ibu Glo will you attent RTD Relo next Wed?
MichaelDK: I can't really introduce them all in this course--it's just too much. So I am putting together the next course: Exploring Web 2.0: Tools for Classroom Teaching and Professional Development.
MichaelDK: Hi Chikile - who are you?
MichaelDK: BTW, can you all see the Whiteboard above and to the right of this Chat screen?
WiwikGst16: If I could catch it.... but I'm blessed I have given a rare opportunity to take this course
GloriaGst11: If I have the time and none of those endless meetings come in the way of stopping me, I'll be there. Are you gong to start talking about this Wiwik. The RTD by the way is a Round Table Discussion which the RELO office in Jakarata has set up or teachers.
MichaelDK: Is there a "write" and "read" link visible? I'm thinking you have to be a Tapped In Member to use that board with me. . .
MichaelDK: Is the RTD discussion virtual or real?
WiwikGst16: Ibu Glo is one of my wonderful mentors
GloriaGst11: It's real. But that's a thought, maybe we can expand, yeah, Wiwik and make it virtual. We'd reach more teachers that way.
ChikileGst12: hi,all! sorry for being late - it was a real struggle - to find the way to join you but here I am - better late than never! i am lyudmila or Mila, surname - Chikileva
MichaelDK: Hi Mila. Glad you could make it.
MichaelDK: We are six now. That's pretty good.
MichaelDK: How are things in Moscow?
WiwikGst16: Lyudmila it's you??? please check and add our website...ooh my goodness you're late, but it's oke we will tell you late
LiaGst9: Six is good, but my dog is getting antsy for his walk, so I will be signing off. Thanks for chatting with me. It was fun.
ChikileGst12: I phoned Maria, hi from her, she is in struggle with Java
GloriaGst11: Good to have had you with us Lia.
WiwikGst16: See you in Web Lia
MichaelDK: OK Lia. My golden will need walking soon to.
LiaGst9: bye
MichaelDK: OK, give Maria our best.
LiaGst9 left the room.
GloriaGst11: I'm glad we have dog lovoers in the group.
MichaelDK: I'm suprised that many of your computers do not have Java.
ChikileGst12: Lia, please be more active with tour buddies
WiwikGst16: I am Javenese<smile>
GloriaGst11: I've often wondered why it's called Java.
ChikileGst12: wiwik, have you sent your photo? I promise to send mine. I realyy want to meet you face to face!
MichaelDK: Wiwik's photo is online here:
WiwikGst16: Mila I have visited your site mentioned before that's great, why don't you put in our Website with your comments and suggestion
GloriaGst11: Take it from me, Wiwik is just the way she sounds, always smiling. . . she doesn't walk into a room, she bounds in and you catch every one smiling back.
MichaelDK: http://www.lclark.edu/~krauss/usia/participantphotos.html
MichaelDK: Isn't that interesting how one gets an image via the text on the Net.
ChikileGst12: Michael, thanks a lot for all your patience with us
MichaelDK: Still, multimedia is much better. I am always glad to get the photos.
ChikileGst12: mike, it ia very hot in Moscow now - hard to do homework!
GloriaGst11: I really think that using chat with the students in a particular subject will help them to be more talkative. Indonesians are pretty shy in the classroom but give them a chance and they open up.
MichaelDK: Oh, it's hot here in POrtland too. Unusual. It was about 39 C (100F) today.
WiwikGst16: I agrre with you Ma'am
MichaelDK: We took the grandkids swimming. And we have a tiny plastic wading pool in our front yard to cool down.
MichaelDK: I even had to soak down the dog!
MichaelDK: Gloria and all. Chat is good. Consider too having students keep journals or respond to assignments with Nicenet.
GloriaGst11: I used to have a German Shepherd that would run through the hose whenever I watered the plants.
ChikileGst12: no time for swimming for us - exploring www!
WiwikGst16: Thank you Michael Thank you all
MichaelDK: That gives student a chance to think things over. I have used with with students for years. Now that you have used it on the WDP, you can easily make your own "class" andn it's free.
GloriaGst11: My students already write journals, but this was always done in notebooks. Now, I'm gong to get t them to do it with computers. They'll complain because of limited technology, but I think it will work. It beats having to lug their journals around when they want me to read them.
ChikileGst12: Mike, do you plan to visit Moscow this year? I could come to share my positive impressions of the course when you meet teachers
MichaelDK: Well, you can all stay and chat on as long as you like. I have dishes still to do (my wife and I alternate weeks of cooking and washing up and it's my week). With all our Hungarian guests, we are doing a lot of cooking and cleaning!
MichaelDK: Yes, elec. journals are much better. Everyone shares and there is no problem with bad handwriting.
WiwikGst16: Thank everybuddys, it seem I have to do another job, see you all.....
MichaelDK: It also gives a LOT of language that you can use for grammar lessons.
MichaelDK: I was just in Moscow in April. Don't know when my next trip will be. But when I come, would love to meet you!
MichaelDK waves goodbye
MichaelDK: Dishes and dog are waiting!
ChikileGst12: Tatiana, are you with us?
WiwikGst16 left the room (signed off).
MichaelDK: Please feel free to stay on and chat.
TatianaGst5 left the room (signed off).
GloriaGst11: I think I'll have to be going too. Thank you for this chance, Michael. We know each other better now. Names are no longer just names. One can also have faces and personalities now.
MichaelDK: Bye!!!
GloriaGst11: Thanks again. "Bye all.
MichaelDK: You're right Gloria!
