MichaelDK: Hello. I'll be here in a moment. Just wait for me. Thanks,
BakulGst9 joined the room.
ValentiGst6 joined the room.
BakulGst9: Hello =)
TatianaGst2: Hi All
ValentiGst6: Hi everybody. Nice meeting you!
MichaelDK waves hello to tatiana bakul and valentina
MichaelDK: Is it the Valentina from Novosibirsk or Kavkazskiy?
MichaelDK: Elista is well represented.
MichaelDK: Are you all able to type messages?
BakulGst9: Yes =)
ValentiGst6: Novosibirsk, Siberia. You know, it is my first time to chat. Able to type, able to read.
TatianaGst2: Yes
MichaelDK: Great.
MichaelDK: What time is it where you are?
BakulGst9: 19.04
ValentiGst6: Same time with Jakarta. So it is so wierd. 10 p.m.
MichaelDK: Bakul, did you download Java. Is that why you had a problem last time?
BakulGst9: I don't know. I downloaded it long ago but it didn't work
BakulGst9: so I've changed the computer =))))
MichaelDK: I encourage each of you to join Tapped In when you leave today. It's free and you'll have an office like this one at your service.
MichaelDK: Ah, good idea Bakul.
TatianaGst2: Irina was in the reception she didn't join us yet
BakulGst9: =)))
MichaelDK: Do your students have access to a computer to do a chat like this one if you had an office in Tapped In?
ValentiGst6: O.K. I'll try. But someone asked me what i am doing there
BakulGst9: I think yes
BakulGst9: we have a lab at the university
ValentiGst6: My students chat a lot. Though I am not sure what sites
MichaelDK: Just to let you know. We are having a rare thundestorm here at the moment. So, if I disappear suddenly, you'll know that our power went out. Very strange for Portland.
TatianaGst2: It's a great idea. Michael how did you take a tapescript of our last chat?
IrinaV joined the room.
ValentiGst6: Hi irina
BakulGst9: Hello =)))
IrinaV left the room.
MichaelDK: Hi I'm back.
MichaelDK: I unplugged our other computers. We just had a close lightening strike.
ValentiGst6: Michael, do not dissapear. we need to finish the course
ValentiGst6: Bye, Irina
IrinaV joined the room.
ValentiGst6: Hi, Irina
IrinaV: Hi, glad to meet you all
ValentiGst6: Michael, what do you think about our progress in studying?
BakulGst9: a very dangerous question =)))

MichaelDK: Hi I'm back.
MichaelDK: Our power went on and off from the lightening and I had to log in again.
MichaelDK: Are you there?
IrinaV: yes
ValentiGst6: Yes. Did you get my question?
MichaelDK: I was saying that if you join tapped in, you automatically get a transcript of every chat you participate in.
MichaelDK: Was that the question, V?
MichaelDK: Or was there another?
ValentiGst6: What do u think about our progress in the course?
ValentiGst6: What is your best and worst experience working with groups like us?
MichaelDK: Overall, the progress is good, though there are a few people who are behind and I'm a bit worried.
MichaelDK: I like the idea of having Buddy groups on WDP as there has been some good interaction there.
IrinaV: Only russians are online?
MichaelDK: How is it going for you?
MichaelDK: Yes, we had Indonesians with us last time, but it's a bit late at night and maybe they don't have access.
ValentiGst6: Yes. I can understand. Though I will catch up.
MichaelDK: I don't mind people being a bit behind. That's why I give a Week 4 for those who need it. I'm not worried. It's kind of like the tortoise and hare if you know that story. The tortoise does fine: slow and steady.
MichaelDK: Hi Irina. I just noticed you.
MichaelDK smiles aplogetically
IrinaV: let's wait a bit - somebody may come in later I was talking to JeffC, is he our buddy or not?
ValentiGst6: Oh, yes. Slow and steady. That is the right approach. You know, I always need some more time.
MichaelDK: No, Jeff C is a volunteer stationed at the Tapped In reception. He answers questions for you when you log in as a guest.
BakulGst9: I' a tortoise too =))) The tasks are not difficult, but quite time consuming
IrinaV: Michael how can i copy video clips to my blog? Hyper doesn't work
MichaelDK: Hi Irina. Not sure what you mean "hyper" doesn't work.
ValentiGst6: What is Hyper? Sorry.
IrinaV: When I make links to another sites
IrinaV: Valentina, if you get you blog at blogger. com you can make hyperlink to your filament sites! I did. But can't link video clips from another sites there
MichaelDK: Are you talking about video clips that are already on the Web?
BakulGst9 left the room (signed off).
BakulGst9 joined the room.
IrinaV: f.e. on the blog you recommended to learn RSS today
ValentiGst6: Michael, there are only 2 of us in our buddy group. Nobody joins, no communication. is it the first time in your program? Is it OK to move to another group?
IrinaV: I see Chris and Lisa at the reception
MichaelDK: Valentina--sure you can join another Buddy group. Any interaction that I can foster is a step in the right direction.
MichaelDK: OK, let me see if I can get Chris and Liza here.
IrinaV: Jeff explain how to get here
ChrisGst10 joined the room.
IrinaV: Hi Chris
MichaelDK: By the way, you can link to a video that is online or you can embed it in your blog. Here is a link to a video that you'd find interesting. You can click it now, but you may have trouble getting back to us. Here is the link: http://www.commoncraft.com/store-item/podcasting
MichaelDK: Hi Chris. Good that you're not on a mountaintop at the moment. This lightening storm herer in Portland is pretty amazing and unusual!
IrinaV: Thank you I 'll try it later. If I still have trouble I'll send email
IvoneGst12 joined the room.
IvoneGst12: Hi everyone
ValentiGst6: Hello Ivone
ChrisGst10: I was on a mountaintop earlier with no thunderstorms, the thunderstorms are pretty cool.
TatianaGst2 left the room (signed off).
IvoneGst12: sorry I'm late
IrinaV: Hi Ivone! Glad to hear you, I never received any cartoons!
IvoneGst12: Me neither
IvoneGst12: I received the first one I made
MichaelDK: Irina- to embed a video so it shows up directly in a blog, when you are at the video, e.g. in Youtube, there will be some "code" to copy and paste into your blog and the video then will show up right in your blog.
IvoneGst12: Hi Michael
MichaelDK: Hi Ivone. Now we've got Russian, US and Indonesia together. That's great.
IrinaV: I copied the code in by blog in Hyperlink window - and no link! May be I'd better to copy it directly in the text message?
ValentiGst6: Aha, globalization
MichaelDK: By the way, if you want a bigger screen.
ChrisGst10: I've been having connection problems, sorry I was late getting on. Hope it doesn't go out again.
MichaelDK: Irina, yes copy the code in the text window of your blog post and that should work. Let me know if you are successful. Also, give us the address of your blog please so we can have a visit.
IrinaV: I will
IrinaV: Valentina, what about thunderstorms and hurricanes?
BakulGst9: Tatiana is having some troubles with connection
IrinaV: sad
MichaelDK: I hear my 3 and 4 year old grandkids up--so if I get a bit distracted, you'll know why. Their parents are also up so they should take care of them now.
IrinaV: Ivone could you try resending me your cartoon at my personal email?
ValentiGst6: I am afraid of them. Though I really like the eclipse.
MichaelDK: You guys are talking about the makebeliefcomixs site right?
IvoneGst12: Sure Ira, I'll give it another try.
IrinaV: Right!
IvoneGst12: Yes, Michael.
IvoneGst12: I've tried four times
ValentiGst6: What cartoons r u talking about? have I missed something?
IvoneGst12: but only once that I got it in my email.
IrinaV: I tried also several times to email it to edu 648, I'll try your personal email ther, Ivone
BakulGst9: just the same problem
ChrisGst10: In hood River, OR lightning is happening and 3 seconds later thunder happens. Pretty close!
IvoneGst12: We are creating comic strips in makebeliefcomix, Val.
BakulGst9: the only way to save your cartoon is to print it =(
IvoneGst12: Oke Ira.
IrinaV: And trying to exchange via email - with problems
ValentiGst6: Thanks, sounds interesting. I will get it later.
MichaelDK: Well, this is a great example of how chat can be interesting and also tough to follow with differing threads.
IrinaV: Let's try again to everybody - edu648?
IvoneGst12: Perhaps we should send email to the creator and ask?
TatianaGst16 joined the room.
MichaelDK: I'll comment in a minute about how this affects use with students.
MichaelDK: Re the comics. We're talking about a site that is great, but I did not assign it.
MichaelDK: It's wonderful how teachers find sites and then share them with each other.
IrinaV: The bad thing we can't save cartoons to get back later
MichaelDK: I encourage that!
MichaelDK: I believe the site is http://www.makebeliefscomix.com/
MichaelDK: Irina, if you or others would check out your questions and email ed648 that would be great.
MichaelDK: You can't email attachments or files to ed648 because they will be refused so please don't do that.
MichaelDK: It's a protection for virus purposes that is automatically integrated into that email listserv software.
IrinaV: The thing is that we should motivate student to use our sites - so using fun things like cartoons - can be encouraging. I found in the Web also avataras! It's like live cartonns speaking with you... cool! But it's not free
MichaelDK: BTW, although I've been a bit negligent in updating the site lately, you'll all find many many resources you can use with students at my ESL Independent Study Lab
IrinaV: I see... I'll send it to Ivove email then
IvoneGst12: I tried to send the comics to private email address, Michael. But still, I only succeed once.
MichaelDK: It at http://www.lclark.edu/~krauss/toppicks/toppicks.html
IrinaV: I didn't get it Ivone
MichaelDK: You can try sending me a comic you created to me personally krauss@lclark.edu
IvoneGst12: I got it the first one
IvoneGst12: Oke. Let me try it.
TatianaGst16 left the room (signed off).
ValentiGst6: Michael, thank you for sharing all sites, links and everything. I am afraid that this year i will spend my spare time to study them.
MichaelDK: BTW, I'll be posting the transcript of this chat so you can try out all these sites we are mentioning. It will be on the WHP--link to chats. I'll do it later today.
TatianaGst16 joined the room.
MichaelDK: Valentina, you have the key. Coming back later to these sites, putting in time to think how you can use them with your students. That's where the most benefits come in!
EndahGst17 joined the room.
EndahGst17: hello
IrinaV: Chris we havr thunderstorms in Moscow. It was a real flood last month here
ValentiGst6: Absolutely so.
EndahGst17: hello all
MichaelDK: Hi Endah. Another Indonesian joins us.
IvoneGst12: Hi Endah
EndahGst17 smiles
ChrisGst10: have anyone ever used a chat room in their classroom with their students
MichaelDK: Enda, you've used this before, no?
EndahGst17: never
EndahGst17: i did in my morning time
EndahGst17: but nobody online
MichaelDK smiles
IrinaV: All the time only off line ))))
MichaelDK: Use a colon first and then type and your sentence comes up as an action.
ValentiGst6: I think about arranging a couple of seminars for my colleagues. Let them know a new road.
MichaelDK looks around wondering if people understand
MichaelDK: Sure, you can join tapped in and then have people meet you to chat
EndahGst17: micheel can we use cam here?
MichaelDK: Use it with students or teachers
MichaelDK: No, it's only text. For Web cam, audio and text, I'd suggest Skype
EndahGst17: ok
MichaelDK: Or perhaps some of you use yahoo messenger, etc.
EndahGst17: i must finish my blog michael. pls check
IrinaV: -)))
EndahGst17: yes i am used to with ym
IvoneGst12: What about using Course Management System like Blackboard?
MichaelDK: I do video conferencing with family in Hungary several times a week with skype at http://www.skype.com/
MichaelDK: Yes, Blackboard or WebCT or Moodle, they all are poplular.
EndahGst17: what is ur skype id Mike
MichaelDK: I dont' cover them because not everyone has access to them, they are not free and/or not simple to set up.
MichaelDK: My skype name is michaelkrauss
IrinaV: I came acroos with webcam selection difficulty. Can you recommend a reliable one?
ChrisGst10 left the room (signed off).
MichaelDK: Hmm, I have an apple computer. The one I use is --it's on another computer in the house--I dont' remember at the moment.
MichaelDK: It cost about $40 US
IrinaV: with micro?
MichaelDK: It's an iMage camera. I just looked.
EndahGst17: michael how to add your name? I m new with skype
ValentiGst6: I heard you can use a digital camera as a web cam. it is even better.
IrinaV: They say Microsoft webcams are good for skype as well
MichaelDK: http://www.ecamm.com/ is the site. Dont' know if it's just for apple. You could check it
IrinaV: ok
MichaelDK: Any USB Web cam should work. I believe you can test your Web cam when you are on skype. they may even recommend a Web cam on the site. They do sell headphones and microphone set which makes sound much better.
MichaelDK: When you go to Skype, you download a bit of software. When you install it, you wil go through steps to choose a Skype name
IrinaV: we have a big choice here.. i looked up in the net already
EndahGst17: i already install skype and add your name already Mike. it seems you are offline. hope i can chat with you someday by using my webcam
MichaelDK: I'm going to create a new course for the ELO in Moscow. We'll have Russian teachers as well as others from around the world. We'll focus on these types of Web 2.0 tools. I'll teach it first time in late October
IrinaV: I downloaded Windows XP 2SP - it was Roxio ( I had it already)
MichaelDK: enda, I got your Skype and allowed you to add me (and I added you to my list). I'm not on a computer with WEb cam now. We can chat another time for sure.
EndahGst17: ok tks
IrinaV: My skype mane is eva.basil, but I didn't get wabcam yet
EndahGst17: Micheal, what is Web 2.0?
MichaelDK: I have been hesitant to try some of these new tools with international group of teachers because there is so much variety in quality of computer and internet connectoin.
MichaelDK: Web 2.0 refers to the Web tools that focus on collaboration and sharing of information
EndahGst17: Irina, you can add me indahr_99
MichaelDK: Rather than just the broadcast of information one way, from the creator to the user.
BakulGst9: something like wiki?
IrinaV: Let us know when you get the course ready to enroll
ValentiGst6: Sorry guys, you discuss so specific and advanced things i can not get it
IrinaV: Good Enda, I will thanks
TatianaGst16 left the room (signed off).
MichaelDK: yes, wikis, blogs, podcasts, social networking sites like My Space and Facebook. I plan to use one called Ning, which I think would work well for educators.
MichaelDK: Valentina, don't worry!!
MichaelDK: We got off the course materials here and you are not expected to follow all this.
EndahGst17: how can I see facebook? what site should i open?
MichaelDK: But just hearing these terms and going back to the transcript later will familiarize you with some things for the future.
IrinaV: have u heard about fakebook?
MichaelDK: http://www.facebook.com/
EndahGst17: no
EndahGst17: tks Mike, let me open it
EndahGst17 left the room (signed off).
IrinaV: the list of people you never want to contact-)))
MichaelDK laughs outloud
IrinaV: I found a cartoon about
MichaelDK: Social networking sites allow you to create "friends" plus you can collaborate on pages (like with a Wiki), you can upoad photos and video, you can have email discussion lists, chats, etc., all on one site. I think this will be useful for groups of teachers at a distance who want to work on professional development.
MichaelDK: I'm working with David Fay, RELO, at the ELO Moscow to create a course to help members of distant teachers associations in Russia to collaborate online.
EndahGst10 joined the room.
MichaelDK: I'm hoping that my college, Lewis & Clark, will adopt the course so we can have US teachers (and also other RELO's) so we can have Indonesians, and other teachers from all over
EndahGst10: oh my god I am lost. sorry
EndahGst10: how can i see the previous conversation?
MichaelDK: That's OK. It's hard to get back on track after looking for a Web site.
IrinaV: scroll up
MichaelDK: You can scroll the conversation on the right of your window.
ValentiGst6: it is 11 p.m. here. I am so sorry to leave you all. hope to hear from you later. Michael, thank you for the opportunity to chat. Hope, that your thunderstorm is over.
MichaelDK: Yes, it's over.
ValentiGst6: good bye everyone
IrinaV: chris 's gone to check it
MichaelDK: Actually, I have to attend to the mundane. I have a dentist appointment in 45 minutes and need to leave as well.
EndahGst10: i was off from tappedin for a moment then I lost the previous conversation.
IrinaV: Thank you. It was cool. Bye
MichaelDK: You welcome to remain and chat as long as you like. I will post a transcript of our time together today. Thanks so much for taking time to chat with us!
EndahGst10: how can I see the previous conversation.? because it
BakulGst9: thanks, bye
MichaelDK: Endah, you've started a new chat window and can't get back.
MichaelDK: but I'll post it to the WHP, OK?
MichaelDK: Ciao!
IvoneGst12: Bye..
EndahGst10: ok tks michael
