Who should take this course?
Anyone who is interested in learning more about the Internet and how it can enhance education would benefit from this course. Though designed specifically with ESL /EFL (English as a Second Language/English as a Foreign Language) teachers in mind, it has been taken by many content area teachers (math, science, language arts, social studies, etc.). These teachers teach students from the primary grades through university. A more complete description is available

What equipment and skills do I need to take the course?
All you need is a reliable computer with Internet access, a Web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.) and a working Email account. Participants need have only very basic Email and Web browsing skills to participate. You will spend a lot of time online. The faster and more reliable your Internet connection, the more efficiently you will be able to move through the assigned tasks.

How long is the course and how much time per day does it take?
The course lasts three weeks (with a fourth week often available for those who need more time to finish up). Depending on your computer skill level, English language ability, typing and Internet connection speed, you'll spend from 2-3 hours/day, five days/week on average to complete the course.

Do I need to be online at a certain time of day?
The time you choose to be online is completely flexible. You can choose to work at different times each day or even in the middle of the night. You can work every day or save up hours to work on the weekends or when it is convenient for you. There will be an opportunity to meet in "real time" with your classmates and instructor, but several time choices will be offered for your convenience.

What percentage of teachers successfully complete the course?
Because I work closely will all participants, the success rate in this course, which has been offered to hundreds of teachers since 1998, is over 95%. If you make a good faith effort at completing the course tasks, you will definitely be successful. In the rare case where injury, illness, or other unforeseen event occurs, teachers are allowed to postpone taking the course until a future session at no additional cost.

What kind of credit will I receive for this course?
There are three options: 1) The course can be taken as non-credit professional development with the participant receiving 30 PDU's (30 professional development units); 2) The course can be taken for 2 hours of continuing education credit from Lewis & Clark College; 3) The course can be taken for two semester hours of transcripted, degree applicable, graduate credit from Lewis & Clark College. If you are unsure whether the graduate credit hours will fulfill needed requirements in your program, please discuss this with your advisor. You may also contact Michael Krauss, the instructor, at

How much does the course cost? How do I make payment?

As of June 2008:

  • The fee for those taking the course for non-credit professional development is $250, payable to Michael Krauss.
  • The fee for those taking the course for 2 hours of continuing education credit is $410, payable to Lewis & Clark College.
  • The fee for those taking the course for transcripted, degree applicable, graduate credit is $1604, payable to Lewis & Clark College.

Method of payment: The payment to Michael Krauss can be by check, bank wire, Western Union or Visa card. To pay by Visa to Michael Krauss, click here. Reimbursement for payment: Many teachers are reimbursed for tuition costs by their school districts or universities. Lewis & Clark College can accept Purchase Orders (P.O's) for those taking the course for continuing education or graduate credit. How do I register?

For Professional Development Credit (30 PDU's): Register by emailing Michael Krauss or phoning him at 503-331-0776. No other forms are required.

For Continuing Education Credit (2 semester hours): Register by emailing Michael Krauss or phoning him at 503-331-0776. In addition, you must fill out and send in to Lewis & Clark College the registration form at http://www.lclark.edu/dept/ccps/registration.html

For Graduate Credit (2 semester hours): Register by emailing Michael Krauss or phoning him at 503-331-0776. In addition, you must fill out and send in to Lewis & Clark College the Special Student Application and Registration Form.

When is the course offered?
The course is three weeks long and is offered three times per year: fall, winter and summer. Dates change and are set a few months in advance. For the dates of the next offering, check the Workshop Home Page (WHP) at

What if I will be away during part of the course?
If you will be unable to participate for 1-3 days during the course, this should not be a problem. The course is flexible enough so that you can double up on work either before or after your absence. If you will be unable to participate for longer than three days, you should discuss this with the instructor to determine if taking the course will be feasible.

Will I receive a transcript? Will I receive a certificate of completion?
Those taking the course non-credit are entitled to receive a certificate upon successful completion of the course. The instructor will prepare an unofficial certificate for you at no charge. This certificate is quite professional in appearance, but does not carry the official seal of the college. If an official certificate issued by Lewis & Clark College is desired, one is available for a charge of $25.

Those taking the course for continuing education credit or graduate credit may request an official certificate from Lewis & Clark College at no additional fee.

For those taking the course for continuing education or graduate credit, a transcript is available by written request from the Registrar's office at the Graduate School of Education. There is a $5 fee for the transcript, and they are issued on a first come-first served basis. You may email the Graduate Registrar at gradreg@lclark.edu, phone 503-768-6030 or Fax 503-768-6035. How will I know what to do on the first day of the course?
You can go to the
Workshop Home Page, click on the "Syllabus" link, and look at Week 1 Day 1. This will give you the tasks for the first day of the course. In addition, 2-3 days before the course begins, you will receive an email message from the instructor going over all the important points of the class. If you have additional questions, you may email the instructor, krauss@lclark.edu, and your questions will be answered.
