In the Age of Information Technology
Network: A network is a set of interconnected nodes. Networks are flexible, adaptive structures that, powered by information technology, can perform any task that has been programmed in the network. (Castells)
Since the introduction of Information technology, social networks have been fundamentally changed, this additional variable creates the need for new theories of social interaction, as well as for social change. Since the development and production of information technology is largely dependent on capital, the corporations who manipulate this force have gained new authority over the formation of social networks, even outside the sphere of work. New social networks have incorporated corporate controlled communications technology across the board, and this has fundamentally changed the structure of interactions in Work, Leisure, and Consumption. Whether it be tele-commuting or e-mail discussion groups, what Manuel Castells calls the "Network Society" has fundamentally altered the way society consumes, evolves, and communicates.
