This ad is for an investment/insurance firm called
Mass
Mutual. The message of this ad, created to no
small extent by the picture, is that Mass Mutual is financially
sound, and that they can help you provide a stable future for your
family. Consider the ad without
the child for a moment. With the man shaving alone, the message of
the ad does not quite have enough legitimacy to make a strong case.
Once the child is added, however, the message becomes fairly
authentic. The child represents a youth with a very real
future that depends largely on the actions of the
parents (the targets of this ad). The child's presence in the ad also
instantly "creates" a family. The father, alone, puts the ad on a
personal level; the addition of the child brings in the notion of a
greater family, and the responsibility that comes with it.
This ad features three very young children discussing
the need to find a firm who can"strategize, design, and host"their web site. By relating the three to a company
of business men, the ad automatically shows these children as
future members of the global business community.
The text at the bottom of the ad reestablishes this connection by
saying: "It's amazing how fast
the internet is maturing",
and then promoting the many features of Iron
Light, the firm the ad
promotes. By portraying the children as business men, the ad makes a
statement on how quickly children grow up to become members of a
productive society. By commenting on the fast growth of the internet,
on which the advertised firm is based, the ad transfers the notion of
a 'fast future'
from the children to the the firm. In this way, the advertiser 'uses'
the child to represent the firm's significance in the future.
