The idea of an authentic Other is upheld
by our notion of the self.
In fact, our
desire for authenticity, which propels our need for Otherness, is driven by
the very definition of the subject. The Cartesian notion of the self,
that there is a real self, a diamond within each one of us, is
replayed through our search for authenticity. Only until our notion
of identity/self/soul changes, will our search for authenticity
diminish. So just as the self is constituted through the Other, our
search for an authentic Other is predicated on the notion that there
is a real, already constituted self.
