Survival
- Water - 1/2 gallon drinking water per person per day plus same amount for hygiene and cooking
- First aid kit
- First aid reference guide
- Food (packaged, canned, no-cook, baby food and for special diets)
- Can opener (non-electric)
- Blankets or sleeping bags
- Working smoke detectors, properly installed
- Fire extinguisher—A-B-C type
- Essential medications and eyeglasses
- Food and water for pets
- Portable radio and spare batteries
- Flashlights and spare batteries
Sanitation Supplies
- Large plastic trash bags for trash, waste, and water protection
- Large trash can
- Bar soap and liquid detergent
- Shampoo
- Toothpaste/toothbrushes
- Feminine and infant supplies
- Toilet paper
- Household liquid bleach to purify water
- Eyedropper to measure bleach
- Newspaper to wrap garbage and waste
- Pre-moistened towelettes
Safety and Comfort
- Heavy gloves for cleaning up debris
- Sturdy shoes (keep pair by bed)
- Matches (for campstove) kept in waterproof, child-resistant container
- Garden hose with shut off nozzle for fire fighting
- Tent and tarps
- Clothes to protect from cold and rain
- Cooking
- Barbecue and/or camp stove
- Fuel for cooking
- Pots and heavy duty aluminum foil
- Paper plates and cups
- Plastic spoons, knives and forks
- Paper towels
- Cooking utensils
Tools and Supplies
- Crescent wrench, 12" or longer (store one near natural gas meter in waterproof container)
- Axe, shovel, pry bar, broom
- Screw drivers, pliers, hammer
- Coil of 1/2" nylon rope - 50 feet
- Duct tape and plastic sheeting
- Pocket knife and staple gun
- Pen and paper
- Map of local area to locate emergency services such as Red Cross shelters
- Roll of quarters for pay phone
Evacuation Kit
At your bedside, keep sturdy shoes, flashlight, work gloves, jump-in clothes and eyeglasses. In a moveable container near the front door, store the following. You may need these items at a shelter.
- Prescription drugs in child proof containers
- Food for special diets
- Clothing for 24 hours
- Eyeglasses/contact lens
- Radio, flashlight, batteries
- Personal hygiene items
- Money, credit cards, checks, I.D., important papers and photos
- Infant/child supplies
- Bedding
- Toys and games
- Phone numbers/addresses of people you’ll want to contact
Storage of Supplies
Store emergency supplies in one location that is cool, dark and safe (such as a garage corner, closet, or under a bed). Use clean, portable containers such as a garbage can on wheels or plastic tubs with lids. Replace stored food once a year. Never remove supplies without replacing them.
