Howard Hall - LEED GOLD

In 1997 planning began for Howard Hall on the undergraduate campus. Through every step along the way the development for Howard has been a model of sustainability. Besides being labelled LEED gold Howard Hall is also PGE Advantage level certified.

Howard Hall

Completed in 2005 Howard Hall employs several innovative measures to improve efficiency and promote sustainability.

1. undercover bike parking and bike repair room

2. storm water filtration and storage

3. radiant heating

4. natural ventilation

5. natural lighting

6. recycling of old materials and minimal site disturbance

Howard Construction Site

Howard Hall replaced several old academic buildings. Howard Hall increased the number of offices by 25 and classrooms by 14 yet uses less energy then the buildings it replaced

air flow in howard

This is accomplished through efficient design measures that maximize airflow and sunlight. The floor system is raised, and the heated air comes up through vents in the floor and out through ventilation in the ceiling. Though seemingly minimal, this simple difference allows the building’s fans to be lowered significantly – every 10% reduction of fan movement results in a 30% reduction of needed energy. Also, less heat is needed to keep the building warm, because the heat escapes at a slower rate.
