1952
Sally McBride B.A. won the Benton County Cultural Coalition’s award for Lifetime Contribution to Culture for 2012. McBride is a music teacher and key organizer of the Corvallis-Oregon State University Symphony’s annual concert for fifth- graders. She worked for 10 years as the rehearsal pianist for the Robert Joffrey Ballet. She earned a master’s degree in music education from Harvard University and has enjoyed an extensive career teaching music.
Richard Metzler B.A. writes, “I remember climbing Palatine Hill, first on a bike, then in my little 1936 Plymouth coupe with a rumble seat.” Two of his most memorable professors were Bill Shearer and Lewis Thayer. Metzler worked at Hanford and with the Weyerhaeuser Company for more than 30 years. “Please tell your students that I am a living witness—thanks to Lewis & Clark. Long live the tradition.”1953

George Held B.S. says he was honored to be inducted into the Lewis & Clark Sports Hall of Fame on October 21, 2011.
1966
John Venator B.S. participated in the invitation-only World Travel and Tourism Council’s Americas Summit at the Grand Velas Riviera Maya Hotel in Quintana Roo, Mexico. Mexican President Felipe Calderón opened the conference along with Venator’s good friend, Mexican Secretary of Tourism Gloria Guevara. Venator shared his experiences traveling and living in Mexico for over 50 years as an expat.

Paula Miller Bechtold B.S., J.D. ’75 was reelected to a fourth term as Circuit Judge for the 15th Judicial District of Oregon (Coos/Curry Counties).
Jean Wasson Schroepfer CAS retired after 8 years as a county social worker and 12 years as a legal editor. She now manages her residential rental properties.

Rosalind Hamar B.A., M.A.T. ’74 finished her first year at her new school, Valley Montessori School in Livermore, California. “Love the school and love our new hometown!”

Richard Moore B.S. has pursued the craft of songwriting since he graduated with an English degree. He and Cal Scott B.A. ’72 completed production of a music video titled “Oregon Home,” which airs on Oregon Public Broadcasting. Moore is collaborating with Monte Merrick B.A. ’71 on a theatrical production, Rain! The Musical. In May, Steve Knox B.S. ’72 assisted with a staged reading at Lakewood Center for the Arts in Lake Oswego.

Joyce Gilman Liljeholm M.Ed. ’78 received the Richard E. Walker Award in May from the Oregon Safe Schools and Communities Coalition in recognition of her years of work to reduce bullying in schools. The health and safety of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer youth are particular areas of concern for Liljeholm.

Elisabeth Hampton-Gray B.S. hosts the new TV series Oregon Quilting, produced through Metro East Community Media TV Studios in Portland.

Zena B.A., M.A.T. ’95 was honored with two teaching awards: the Rex Rabold Award for Excellence in Theatre Education (given by the Oregon Theatre Educators’ Association) and the Educational Theatre Association’s Exemplary High School Theatre Program Award. A longtime teacher, Zena recently finished her seventh year at Portland’s Parkrose High School. She currently serves as treasurer of the Oregon Thespians and president of the Oregon Theatre Educators’ Association.

Arts & Sciences Reunion June 20-23, 2012 Kristin Keith B.A., an English major, worked as a closing clerk for Tower Books shortly after graduation. She is now the mid-Atlantic sales representative for W.W. Norton & Company. Keith also serves on the New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association advisory committee.

Aleya Dao B.A. became a licensed acupuncturist in Colorado and a minister in California after earning a master’s degree in Oriental medicine from the Southwest Acupuncture College in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She is currently a sound healer, energy practitioner, doctor of Oriental medicine, and spiritual guide. She performs meditation toning concerts around the country.

Jeffrey Tharsen B.A. received a Fulbright award to spend 2012–13 conducting research at Fudan University in Shanghai. Jeffrey, Laura Tharsen B.A. ’97, and their two children will live there through summer 2013. They would welcome visits from any friends of Lewis & Clark.
1998
Murray Cizon B.A. joined the International Living Future Institute as its education and training coordinator in October 2011. He coordinated the Living Future 2012 unConference held in May 2012 in Portland. More than 950 leading architects, engineers, designers, and urban planners in the sustainable/green-building movement attended. Cizon was particularly excited to book eco-feminist Vandana Shiva as the Living Future 2012 keynote speaker. Kartikey Shiva B.A. ’03 is her son. Vandana has hosted participants in Lewis & Clark’s overseas study program to India at her seed bank/organic farm, Navdanya. Cizon and his 5-year-old daughter live in the Division/Clinton area of Portland and do their best to “keep things real.” Jennifer Cox Cyphers B.A. lives in Denver “with two freakin’ funny little blonde kids and my husband of 10 years.” She recently launched a new technology company “because I’m a masochist. No, really. It’s fun.” She misses Portland.

2000
Robert Childs B.A. was recognized by The Body as one of five leaders who made a difference in HIV/AIDS in the United States in 2011. Childs has worked with the North Carolina Harm Reduction Coalition in Durham for the past two years. The coalition strives to bridge the gap between law enforcement and drug users. His syringe-access trainings have reached about 3,500 people, saving hundreds, if not thousands, of lives from the spread of HIV.

Arts & Sciences Reunion June 20-23, 2012 Elizabeth Posey B.A. completed her M.P.H. with a concentration in health systems and policy at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
2004
Anna Peters B.A. leads the recruitment effort for more than 1,000 literacy and math tutors, each of whom serves one year in Minnesota schools. “I know that many Lewis & Clark grads end up in Minnesota, so I wanted to get the word out that we’re filling positions! Tutoring positions are great for people who are starting a new career, in career transition, or are retiring.” Those interested can learn more at Minnesota Reading Corps or Minnesota Math Corps.

Brian Federico B.A. completed his M.B.A. in August. He started work as the director of development at the School of Business Administration at Portland State University in January 2012.
2007
Lauren Edwards B.A. is in a joint M.A./Ph.D. program in German and European affairs at Georgetown University through the BMW Center for German and European Studies. She earned her master’s degree in May 2012 and received a fellowship from the Bosch Foundation to work in Germany from September 2012 to May 2013.

Arts & Sciences Reunion June 20-23, 2012 Eric Atcheson B.A. is senior pastor at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Longview, Washington. In May 2011, he accepted a four-year appointment to the Northwest Regional Board of Directors for the Disciples of Christ.
2009
Isaac Holeman B.A. is the chief strategist for Medic Mobile, an organization he cofounded during his time at Lewis & Clark. A winner of the Top 11 in 2011 Innovators Challenge, he has been recognized as a professional who uses mobile technology in innovative ways to improve health systems in remote areas of the world.

Elizabeth “Liz” Holliday B.A. moved back to the United States from London.
Rachel Weber B.A. completed her M.A. in education and earned her California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential at San Jose State University.

Annalei Burkhalter Aegerter B.A. ’96 and Tony Aegerter, May 5, 2012, in Astoria, Oregon. The couple “eloped with friends,” including Erica Petersen Johnson B.A. ’98, Lance Johnson J.D. ’01, and Blythe Butler, former Lewis & Clark associate director of admissions. The couple plan to have a one-year anniversary reception in May 2013 on their farm in southwest Washington.
