Resources for Community Partners

The college has partnered with many Portland organizations and schools in the past and we are always looking to forge new connections. In all of our partnerships, we seek to create a mutually beneficial relationship based on respect, clear communication, and responsibility. We would love to talk to you more about partnering with Lewis & Clark College. You can contact the Academic Civic Engagement Coordinator for more information or to set up an initial meeting. Please email service@lclark.edu.

Working With Students
  • Most students have very full schedules which can limit the amount of time they can commit to community service projects. In addition to their academic course load, many students are involved with co-curricular activities and hold jobs either on or off campus.
  • Exam dates and school holidays will greatly impact a student's availability to volunteer with your organization. To view the academic calendar, click here.
  • Many more students are available to volunteer during the Fall and Spring semesters than during Maymester or the two Summer Sessions.
  • Transportation to and from service opportunities may be an issue for students.
  • Students may not be experienced with the type of work your agency provides or the population you serve. You will need to provide an appropriate orientation and the necessary supervision to enable them to best meet your needs and have a valuable learning experience in the process. Items to discuss in your orientation include: confidentiality, roles and responsibilities, expecations, mission/purpose of your organization. It is also important to discuss what the student expects to take away from their experience with your organization.
  • Students time is important as is yours. Please be sure to identify specific needs that your student volunteer can assist with. Nothing is more frustrating to students then to travel to an opportunity and have nothing to do. Lack of or no work is the quickest way to lose  a student volunteer.
  • If you are interested in partnering with Lewis & Clark by providing work study opportunities with your organization, please contact Student Financial Services
