Leadership & Service Award Information

The Lewis & Clark College Leadership & Service Award is renewable based on continued leadership and service at the College and the maintenance of a 2.8 cumulative grade point average.

 

Recipients are required to complete a self-audit of their activities each spring, to be evaluated by their co-curricular adviser and the Dean of Students.

Year One-Foundations of Leadership

 

The first year recipient should focus their co-curricular activities around participation; discovering what the College offers outside of the classroom; and immersing themselves in life at Lewis & Clark. Students should seek opportunities to gain a greater understanding of community, ethics and values, diversity, and personal leadership styles. The goals of a student in the first year of this program should be:

  • to learn to balance time wisely between academics and co-curricular activities
  • to find out what clubs, organizations or programs they would like to get more involved with
  • to have a well rounded first year experience consisting of a variety of activities
  • to take part in leadership development activities that will enhance their skills and knowledge of self

Year Two-Leadership Focus

 

In the second year, the recipient should focus their co-curricular activities around being involved in one or more co-curricular activities. Students will learn more about themselves, the relationship of self to others and the relationship to local and global communities. Whether through a club, residence hall, ASLC or the Office of Student Leadership & Service, the recipient should take a more active role in the things they care about. Planning events, leading a service project, serving in an appointed role with a club or organization are all examples of activities that will enhance the recipient's co-curricular resume.

 

Year Three-Investment

 

In the third year, the recipient should focus their co-curricular activities around not only making things happen, but making things better. This includes taking the initiative to create new programs which address campus needs and make improvements on those which are already in place. This can be done by creating new traditions for the College, by taking on more challenging leadership roles and by making significant contributions to a club or organization.

 

Year Four-Passing it On

 

By the fourth year, the recipient should begin to reflect upon their whole college experience and begin to pass the knowledge and skills they have learned on to other students. This can be done by presenting at various symposia and by being a mentor and role model for other students to emulate.

At the conclusion of the fourth year students will complete one oral, written or visual presentation about their experiences throughout their time at LC, reflecting on what they have contributed and what they have gained. This synthesis of experiences and their meaning will serve each recipient well as they move beyond their time at Lewis & Clark to employment and/or post-graduate education.
