Art 411: Senior Seminar

Tuesday/Thursday 7pm-8:30

Fields 207

Professor Cara Tomlinson

This course is an examination of critical issues in contemporary art for developing artists. The goal of the course is to build and increase familiarity with the practical and theoretical questions artists face today. We will examine how art is defined and understood (or misunderstood) in our culture, varieties of possible theoretical practices and explore the artist’s relation to the institutions of art. Students will read and discuss critical essays and interviews, experience a variety of artistic practices through visiting artists, exhibits and field trips to artist’s studios, and write and direct discussions. Students will also be expected to organize a brief presentation on their own artistic development.
