Overseas and Off-Campus Programs and the English Department

The English Department's curriculum is generally flexible enough to allow students to participate in an Overseas Studies Program of their choice.  However, majors should keep in mind that they are required to be on campus fall semester of their senior year to complete English 450.  For upcoming programs check with Overseas and Off Campus Programs

Scotland Abroad Program

While attending Lewis & Clark, students may choose to participate in Study Abroad Programs. The Scotland Program is a General Culture Program which provides students with an opportunity to explore the Scottish Highlands and attend school at the University of Glasgow for a semester, as well as explore Scotland through day and weekend trips. While in the Highlands, the trip is hosted by Eddie Stiven, a Scottish Playwrighter/Scriptwrighter/Tutor/Actor .

“During our brief holiday, the Scottish Highlands evoked an incredible sense of harmony, a strange thrill of not needing to be anywhere else in the world. My most prominent impression of Glenelg and the surrounding isles was the sort of dying, ephemeral magic that hung in the highland air. Fading, because fewer and fewer humans remain in such settings, and fleeting, since it could only exist for us during our brief visit. And yet, the uninhabited air allowed for a greater preservation of its beauty. Tourists who sweep through on a whim have the bittersweet luxury of being uninvolved in the rich histories, and unwoven in the legends—and thus, unresponsible for the Highlanders’ fate. The small towns, castle ruins, folklore of battles and love, misty mountains and trail-less paths, although immeasurably enchanting, remain far off, un-relatable in our minds. Yet, the ancient surroundings do not implore the visitor’s attention as much as the residents themselves; every inconclusive legend of Eddie’s contained a simple, unspoken request:

Remember this.” -Kirby Gnerre.
