Opportunities
The Mathematical Sciences Student Assistance and Enrichment Fund
This fund both provides assistance to eligible students with financial need and recognizes an outstanding graduating senior in the department.
Summer Research
Willamette Valley REU-RET Consortium for Mathematics Research for the summers of 2007 thru 2009.
Rogers Summer Program
The Division of Mathematical and Natural Sciences oversees an extremely popular Summer Research Program.
- The Summer of 2008 saw three of our professors, Yung-Pin Chen, Jens Mache and Peter Drake, working with nine undergraduate students and one high school teacher through the Willamette Valley REU-RET and the John S. Rogers Science Research Program.
- During the Summer of 2007, three of our professors, Yung-Pin Chen, Jens Mache and Liz Stanhope, conducted research with teams of undergraduate students through the REU-RET and our John S. Rogers Science Research Program.
- These research posters were created in the Summer of 2006 by four teams of undergraduate students mentored by our professors, Peter Drake, Jens Mache, Liz Stanhope and Iva Stavrov.
- Here's the list of student/faculty research projects for the Summer of 2005, the Summer of 2004 and the Summer of 2003.
Competitions
The Math Sciences Dept. sponsors and encourages student teams each year to participate in the following three competitions:
William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition
- In 2008, two of our students, James E. and Mitch T, scored 10 points each! Two other fine students scores some points, also.
- In December 2006, Brian V again did very well, along with Matt L.
- In December 2005, two of our students, Brian V and Jessica M, scored in the double digits! Two other students scored points, and all four of their names were added to our Putnam Honor Plaque.
- In 2004, two of our students scored high scores! Louis N. scored 20 points, and Brian V. scored 19 points! Fourteen other bright students took up the challenge, but unfortunately, scored no points. This is a most challenging test!
- In 2002, 2 of our students scored very high scores! Jason G. scored 24 points, Chris P. scored 20 points, and 5 others scores at least 1 point. (Half of all participants nationwide score no points!)
ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest
- In November 2007, our one team of 3 students was the 3rd best in Oregon.
- In November 2006, 2 teams of 3 students each participated in this contest. One of our teams was the best team from Oregon, the fourth best team without graduate students, and scored a Lewis & Clark best of 5 problems solved correctly. Contest Results
- We participated in this contest on November 15, 2003, at Portland State University. 2003 and other years' scores
- Lewis & Clark was the 2nd best in Oregon and in undergraduate-only teams for three years, 1999, 2001, & 2002.
COMAP's Mathematical Contest in Modeling
- In 2006, we had one team of 3 students participate and they received a Meritorious Winner Award! This is the second highest award of the contest. Results for 2006
- In Spring 2005, we had two teams of 3 students each. One of our two teams competing this year, received a Meritorious Winner award!! Results for 2005
- In early February 2004, 4 teams of 3 students each, competed in this contest. The problems were particularly challenging this year, however 2 of our teams still received Honorable Mention. Results for 2004
- We were one of the 3 Top Outstanding Teams in 2001!
