To The fore! Lewis & Clark College’s Wind Symphony, a 52-member concert band, presents a concert of masterworks for winds and percussion on Friday, November 20 in Evans Auditorium at 8:00 PM.

We’ve chosen the theme “To the Fore!” because the programming this semester focuses on showcasing several outstanding individuals, sections, and a small ensemble. This expression quaintly appears as an instruction in much of the music of Percy Grainger, whose “Lincolnshire Posy” will be the featured work of the evening. Virtually everyone in the ensemble comes “to the fore” in some portion of this complex composition, considered to be a cornerstone of the wind band repertoire.

We prominently feature two outstanding soloists in their final year at Lewis & Clark: Emily Nelson will perform Alexander Arutiunian’s “Trumpet Concerto” and Nathan Laws solos on the “Concerto No. 1 for Horn” by Richard Strauss. Both compositions, considered to be major works for their particular instruments, will be performed in their entirety, accompanied by the full ensemble.

We also present a woodwind quintet comprised of several principal players from the ensemble: Barra Brown, flute; Erin Ohashi, oboe; Reuben Lange, clarinet; Nathan Laws, French horn; and Anne Koenning, bassoon. They will perform the first movement of Claude Paul Taffenel’s delightful “Woodwind Quintet in G minor.”

We hope you will join for and evening of exciting, dramatic, and very beautiful music as we feature and celebrate the accomplishments of these fine musicians. The event is free to the public.
