The George V. Bishop Opera Workshop presents Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas

Lewis and Clark music department will present Henry Purcell’s opera, Dido and Aeneas on Saturday and Sunday, November 21, and 22 at 8 PM in Evans Auditorium. This production features the vocal talents of 21 LC students. Philip Parr, a visiting scholar from London, UK is directing the piece, Susan McBerry is the musical director, and Kathy Fitzgibbon prepared the chorus.

Mr. Parr will offer a lecture on Wednesday November 11 at 3:30 pm in Miller 105 which is open to the public. He will discuss the various theatrical representations of Dido and Aeneas as taken from Virgil’s Aeneid. His informative talk will help prepare students to understand and enjoy the performance.

Philip Parr is currently the director of the Swaledale Festival in
Yorkshire, which presents chamber music of all genres, and the Bath International Shakespeare Festival. As a director of opera and theatre, his productions have been seen around the world. He is a specialist in small scale and unusual repertoire – particularly new work, early intermezzi and the comedies of Offenbach.

Philip’s specific research interests involve opera translation – the choice between style and content. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a member of the national executive of the British Arts Festivals Association, and a foundation member of the European Network of Shakespeare Festivals.
