Franya Berkman
Assistant Professor of Music
Franya Berkman is an Assistant Professor of Music at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. She received her Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology at Wesleyan University in 2003. Her publications thus far focus on jazz and American culture. (Monument Eternal: The Music of Alice Coltrane [Forthcoming Wesleyan Press] and “Appropriating Universality: The Coltranes and Sixties Spirituality” American Studies, Spring 2005.) She is currently working on her second book, Obo Addy: Ga Master Drummer, Global Musician. Interdisciplinary scholarly interests: spiritual, cultural, and musical hybridity in the 20th/ 21rst century; life history in the study of music-culture.
