James D. Proctor

Professor of Environmental Studies

J.R. Howard Hall

I’m a Professor in the Environmental Studies Program at Lewis & Clark College, with a broad academic background spanning the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities, and research interests in environmental theory. I grew up in the small town of Canyonville in rural southern Oregon, and helped found a nonprofit, Alder Creek Community Forest, on land I own to give something back to this special place. I’ve lived in Swaziland, New Mexico, and California (where I served at UC Santa Barbara for 13 years), and was happy to return to Oregon in 2005 to serve at Lewis & Clark College.

I’m the proud daddy of two beautiful daughters, Joy and Elise, and my dog Beagle Bailey was once well known on campus. I’ve been an active member in the Unitarian Universalist Association, and have also practiced a kempo-style martial art called Kojosho for a long time. The other big thing in my life is music.
