One of the things that I really like about LC is that the campus feels very safe, which has to do with the people who go to LC and where it is. The professors are very friendly and always love to stop and talk and really want to help if you're having trouble. So far classes I have really enjoyed include the second semester of E&D (Exploration and Discovery) and Acting II was awesome too.

Some of my on-campus activities include Portland Hillel, Stitch and Bitch, or whatever event I end up getting dragged to... I also like to hang with friends, watch TV, read, write, bake and dance. I would like to go to London with the LC program, but I'm also looking for an abroad program to go to Israel.

Prospective student advice: visit the colleges you apply to! What the college looks like on the website isn't always what you get when you actually visit the school.

Mathematics

What I like most about LC is the many opportunities to get involved. I am a math major and music minor, but I have also been very involved in the theater department, and I have had research positions with the psychology department and our wonderful geology professor. It is a tight-knit community, for sure. My favorite class has been History of Western Music with Nora Beck.

I went on the London arts program in Spring 2009. We studied music, theatre, and visual art, and went to many, many galleries, plays, symphonies, operas, etc. I am also hoping to do the summer Ghana program; its focus is Ghanian music and dance!

I love to hang out with my wonderful friends, play music in my garage, go for bike rides around Portland, and go in to town to a nice coffee shop and read (and drink coffee, of course). I am also a member of Section Line Drive (A Cappella), Cappella Nova (Choir), and I used to play on Bacchus (Ultimate).

After graduation I plan to participate in the Peace Corps. I will hopefully be teaching math in a French-speaking African country for a couple years... After that, its probably grad school, and then possibly teaching.

Psychology and Math

My name is Yollie and I’m a Psychology major, Math minor from Poulsbo, Washington. I’m interested in education, developing diversity, listening to music, baking, and watching movies.

I am quite the busy body, tutoring at Roosevelt High School and working in the Admissions Office, while being involved with LINCS (Lewis & Clark Intercultural Network for Connecting Students), the Black Student Union, our student government ASLC (Associated Students of Lewis & Clark), and the Ray Warren Multicultural Symposium.

There are a lot of opportunities on campus to get involved with so many organizations and groups. My favorite thing about Lewis & Clark is the people: students, staff and faculty. I love that I can go and talk to my professors and advisers and that they’re able to advise and support me!

I love the community, the amazing professors, the opportunities, the classes, the environment, the campus, the people and all the other nuances of this amazing place. I have little to nothing negative to say about it. It is a phenomenal school.

I lived for two years in Platt West, the Visual and Performing Arts themed residence hall. It was an amazing experience to be surrounded by such talented and incredible people.

Advice for prospective students: "Follow your heart. I woke up one morning and the firs thing I thought was 'I want to go to LC. I belong there.' And that day I sent in my deposit. It was the best decision I ever made. While it is good to listen to outside advice, it was my gut feelings that brought me to the best school ever.

In my free time I do theatre (directing and acting, mostly), SAAB tutoring, Latin Dancing (salsa!). I also like to participate in charity runs such as Portland Run for Congo Women and Portland AIDs Walk. I also enjoy reading, listening to music, dancing, sleeping, hanging out with friends, going for runs, wandering around Portland, watching bad TV shows, writing, singing, crossword puzzles, anything theatrical or Spanish, and I suppose whatever else strikes my fancy at the moment.

My favorite thing about LC is probably the people. Everyone here is kind, helpful, and friendly. This includes professors. Now that I have found my niche in the Theater and Music departments, I feel very much at home with the people that are involved in the same classes and activities. I also like that it's up to each student to challenge themselves. Most of the students take advantage of the opportunities not only for a fantastic education, but to make connections with the faculty and other students by participating in more activities than we often have time for.

I am a member of the all-female a cappella group called the Merry Weathers. I am also a representative for the a cappella union called the Acabrella. I will be studying abroad in London in Spring 2010, where I will be studying Contemporary England, Art, Theater, and Music. In my free time, I cook (often for friends), paint/draw, and spend lots of time downtown with friends.

As for advice for prospective students:
Think long and hard about the type of experience you want. What I liked about Lewis & Clark was that it was very much up to me to be proactive and pursue interests. It should be the same for your college decision. Be proactive, find out every last detail that you want to know about the school you are considering. The best thing I did was really talk to students who were studying the subjects I was interested in. So ask away.
