Environmental Studies
Scholarship
Interdisciplinary research is the cornerstone of the environmental studies program; ENVS students are introduced to concepts and methods taken from the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities. With the goal of supporting in-depth inquiry into environmental problems and solutions, ENVS organizes and contextualizes scholarship opportunities for students and faculty via our situated research sites (described below). Information on the Mellon Research Initiative -- including bios of the participants, research abstracts, and other materials -- can be found here.
Situated research is the method used by ENVS to focus student research into tangible, relevant inquiry by means of specific research areas. Instead of simply focusing on a topic (e.g. water) or a process (e.g. desertification), situated research examines a range of phenomena/practices/perspectives as they act on a particular location. ENVS has identified a number of local/regional and international sites.
A collection of outstanding student scholarship from ENVS: examples of concept maps, student theses, GIS maps and research posters. Documents are organized by course and graduation year (for senior theses).
