What is it?
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) combine hardware, software, and data; allowing us to analyze geographically referenced information. This sort of analysis is well suited to situated research. For example, a map of the Portland Metropolitan Area can be overlayed with data about household income and the presence of particulate matter. The Environmental Studies Program uses the as well as for GIS analysis.
