Dido and Aeneas, Carthage and Rome, So what have the Spaniards got to do with it?

Philip Parr will discuss the opera, Dido and Aeneas, which is being performed on campus by Lewis and Clark students.  His informative talk will help prepare students to understand and enjoy the performance.  
Working with Phillip, who is the stage director, on the Dideo and Aeneas performance are Jane Streeton, vocal coaching, London, England, and Susan McBerry, vocal director and conductor, Lewis and Clark Music department.

Philip Parr is currently the director of the Swaledale Festival in Yorkshire, which presents chamber music of all genres, and the Bath International Shakespeare Festival. As a director of opera and theatre, his productions have been seen around the world. He is a specialist in small scale and unusual repertoire – particularly new work, early intermezzi and the comedies of Offenbach. 

Philip’s specific research interests involve opera translation - the choice between style and content, and links between music and medicine. Recent publications include papers presented at conferences held at Brisbane University and the University of Glamorgan, as well as a chapter in Experiment: conversations in art and science published by the Wellcome Trust (2003). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a member of the national executive of the British Arts Festivals Association, and a foundation member of the European Network of Shakespeare Festivals.
