CLAS 298 - Epic Films: Ancient History and Modern Cinema *CANCELED*
Taught by: Gordon Kelly
Content: For better or worse, the general public’s conception of ancient Greek and Roman history is shaped largely by cinematic recreations. In this course, we will analyze movies that deal with Greco-Roman antiquity (such as 300, Cleopatra, and Gladiator) and compare them to the actual ancient source material on which the films are based (however loosely). Not only will we learn the real history behind these films, but we will also explore how modern film makers reinvent classical antiquity to address modern issues. Satisfies the general education requirement for International Studies.
Prerequisite: None.
