Multicultural Affairs
Our Staff
Latricia Brand, Associate Dean of Students
Latricia Brand has served as Associate Dean of Students and Director of Multicultural Affairs since the summer of 2009. Latricia joined Lewis & Clark after three years of leadership for programs and services designed for underrepresentedstudents, including developing and teaching student transitions courses for freshman at the University of Arizona. Prior to joining the University of Arizona, Latricia spent six years at Rutgers University, where she served as a Research Coordinator for the Center for Early Education and Research, a Learning Specialist for the Rutgers Learning Center, and as Associate Director for Student Support Services/TRIO Programs for the Academic Foundations Center. Latricia earned her Ed.M. at Rutgers University and her B.A. in psychology at Washington University in St. Louis. She solidified her interest in education, research, and practice directed toward the success of underserved student populations.
Latricia's current work in the Office of Multicultural Affairs includes assisting the Lewis & Clark community in advancing our values of diversity and supporting everyone’s personal contribution to a meaningful Lewis & Clark experience. She is excited to have the unique opportunity to support the creative programs such as LINCS, Speaking of Diversity, and heritage month celebrations that reside within Multicultural Affairs. She also works closely with the community to develop unique learning opportunities for students that bridge the academic and student life experience.
Latricia's professional and research interests include diversity and excellence in higher education, student transitions, and the role of peer mentoring in first generation student achievement. Her personal interests include music, popular culture, U.S. politics, cooking, and social media. Tricia lives with her husband, Paul Brand, and two very special cats in Portland, OR.
Shavette McGhee, Associate Director
With both her parents in the Army, Shavette McGhee, moved around for most of her childhood and even attended four high schools in Texas, Germany, and Washington State. Take that into consideration along with her being bi-racial with her mom from Boise, Idaho and her father from McComb, Mississippi (you almost can not find two more distinct cultures) and you will understand why Shavette feels her life embodies the word “multicultural”.
When her parents were stationed at Fort Lewis, WA where they later retired, Shavette decided to go to college at Washington State University (WSU) where she received a degree in Communications. While at WSU Shavette was very active with the Multicultural Student Services, joined Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA), the first sorority founded for and by Black college women, and was a member of Coug Guys & Gals. Because of her positive experiences at WSU with her peers, staff, and faculty, Shavette knew she wanted to work on a college campus and impact students lives the same way those at WSU impacted hers.
Shavette then decided more education was her next step and graduated from Western Washington University with a M.Ed. in Student Affairs in Higher Education. Upon her first day in the graduate program Shavette stated she wanted a job in Multicultural Affairs to have the chance to work with underrepresented students in hopes of impacting their college experiences the same way those staff members did for her at WSU.
Shavette joined the Office of Multicultural Affairs at Lewis & Clark College in July 2008 and hit the ground running. She is excited about all the possibilities at Lewis & Clark College and is in awe everyday of the students she comes into contact with on campus. Shavette and the rest of the staff of the Office of Multicultural Affairs has planned an amazing year for students, staff, faculty, and community members and hope you take the time to visit our office or enjoy one of our programs.
Shavette has a two-year old daughter, Kayla Marie, who keeps her mom on her toes and is a diva-in-training (definitely her mother’s daughter).
