Family Weekend 2010
March 5 - 7, 2010
"Save The Date" postcards will be mailed to parents of all registered Lewis & Clark College students in early January. If your address has changed, please complete the Update Address link at the right side bar. As the spring approaches, we will look forward to welcoming you to campus once again. There will be a number of special activities planned especially for you, the parents and family members of our students so we hope you will register your visit with us. However, we also recognize that many of you will simply use Family Weekend as a convenient reason to return to L&C to spend time with your son or daughter.
2009 Program Highlights
President Tom Hochstettler: State of the College
You won't want to miss this engaging time with our President. You'll have plenty of opportunity to ask questions. Parents always report this is their favorite part of the program. Council Chamber, Templeton Campus Center
Volunteer Service Project: Lend a Hand for the Land!
Help SOLV pull ivy in a neighboring community of West Linn. English Ivy is a species invasive to Oregon and it needs to go! Volunteers will be working with SOLV staff and other community participants to evict the unwanted visitors from Mary S Young State Park.
Exhibitions
reGeneration: 50 photographers of tomorrow
The work of 50 up-and-coming photographers from around the world will be on display at the Ronna and Eric Hoffman Gallery of Contemporary Art this spring. reGeneration: 50 photographers of tomorrow, which opened January 22, is comprised of 150 images that explore what young photographers are up to at the outset of the twenty-first century. In 2005, curators of the world-renowned Musee de l'Elysee in Switzerland selected 50 photographers from hundreds of candidates from the world's top photography schools by asking one key question: is the photographer likely to be known in 20 years' time? This slideshow provides a glimpse of the creativity, ingenuity, and extraordinary talent that defines reGeneration. Gallery hours are 11am - 4pm, Tuesday through Sunday. Performances
"The Blue Room"
With deft insight and wit, "The Blue Room" is a brilliant meditation on men and women, sex and social class, lust and desire. In a contemporary reworking of Arthur Schnitzler's La Ronde, Hare takes on the Freudian subject of projection and reinvents it in a bittersweet landscape that is both eternal and completely up-to-date. Its original production became a sensation in London and one of the most sought-after tickets of its Broadway season.
Alexander String Quartet - Having celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2006, the Alexander String Quartet has performed in the major music capitals of four continents, securing its standing among the world's premier ensembles. Widely admired for its interpretations of Beethoven, Mozart, and Shostakovich, the quartet has also established itself as an important advocate of new music through over 25 commissions and numerous premier performances. Evans Auditorium
MILK - The story of Harvey Milk (1930-1978), the San Francisco supervisor and first openly gay elected official in the United States, who was assassinated along with Mayor George Moscone by Daniel White the year after he was voted to the city supervisors' board. Portlander, Gus Van Sant directed this 2008 drama featuring Sean Penn, Allison Pill, Josh Brolin, Emile Hirsch and James Franco. Council Chamber, Templeton Campus Center
Take A Walk!
Choose from two lovely destinations, one within minutes of the College - Bishop's Close or right here on the beautiful Fir Acres campus and the Evan T. Williams Memorial Tree Walk (maps provided as part of your arrival packet).
Or, discover a well-hidden jewel just minutes from the Lewis & Clark campus. This is a great chance to see the beauty of the Portland area! Bishop’s Close is a historic 13-acre estate tucked onto a high bluff above the Willamette River, about a mile from campus. Its grounds include a spectacular six-acre garden, designed by the New York firm that built New York City’s Central Park, and a 1916 mansion now used as headquarters for the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon. The gardens are open to the public, and thankfully so; their beauty is exceptional, with multiple varieties of magnolias and other native plants, in addition to wonderful views of the river, the rolling hills east of Portland, and Mt. Hood in the distance.
