Representing L&C at a College Fair

Throughout the year, the Office of Admissions receives invitations to many high school college fairs across the country. Most of them take place in the fall, with a few in the spring. In some cases, a member of our staff is able to attend the fair to represent the College. In other cases, the fair may be at a time when a staff member is not in the area and, if the fair organizers permit, we will seek alumni representation.

A college fair is a program in which many colleges and universities are grouped together, usually in a high school gymnasium. This allows students to conveniently obtain information about many schools in a short amount of time. Fairs are usually hosted by high schools, community colleges, or local organizations.

Before the Fair

Though college fairs can take place most any time of the year, the most popular times for a college fair are late September, October, April, and May. Admissions counselors will contact admissions alumni volunteers well in advance to see if they are available to attend the fair. The Admissions office will take care of the registration details and will send fair materials and publications to the alumni volunteer. Before the fair, admissions volunteers should:

  • Read over the materials sent to update alumni about the College. Great sources of information are the College's Web site and the Chronicle.
  • Open the box of publications sent from the Admissions Office. All alumni covering fairs will recieve a tablecloth, publications, reply cards, and information to help answer questions during the fair.

At the College Fair

  • Arrive at least one half hour before the fair starts to allow time to park and get settled.
  • Attire for most collegs fairs is business casual.
  • Check in with the program host and find your table or booth.
  • During the fair answer questions and make notes of any follow-up the Admissions office should handle.
  • Stay at the table for the duration of the college fair.

After the Fair

  • Complete the college fair evaluation.
  • Return the tablecloth and reply cards to the College.
  • Follow up with the Admissions Office if you have any questions about the fair or the admissions alumni volunteer program.

What if I learn about a college fair in my community?

If you hear about a fair in your local area, contact the area counselor for your state or region. The Admissions office will follow-up to learn more about the program. If the college fair allows alumni representatives, your area counselor will be back in touch.
