Portland is a great city to explore, especially by bike, and that’s one of my favorite things to do. Everyone at L&C has their own interesting perspective on things, so I love just socializing and chilling with other students on or off campus. I also play on the lacrosse team, DJ for KLC Radio, host prospective students, and tutor at an elementary school.
That’s not to de-emphasize classes, which are also great. Major Periods and Issues in English Literature with Kurt Fosso was my favorite, but there are lots of great ones out there.
I’m only in my second year, but I have big plans for my future — I intend to go on the Strasbourg overseas program in the spring of 2010, which I think will be great. After that, who knows? I think I’d like to stay in Portland and work for a few years, and maybe start a career here.
Sarah Jackson, '11 La Jolla, CA Art History and Physics
An Art History major with a Physics minor is a strange combination to say the least, but at L&C it works. I love the people here, and have found that the best advice for a prospective student is to figure out what makes YOU happy. Pay close attention to the student body and the student-teacher relationship at all the schools you consider and find something that you know will make you happy.
I think my favorite classes have been West African Drumming and History of the Pacific Northwest, neither of which have anything to do with my academic focus. I also participate in College Outdoors, yoga, Croquet Club, and the Co-op. I’m only a sophomore and don’t know where I’ll be studying abroad yet, but I think Ecuador, Italy, or Ghana would all be amazing — too many choices!
In the meantime, I just play and listen to music, color, read, and work. Enjoy the sun when it’s sunny and enjoy the rain when it’s raining — either way, Portland is great.
Rachel Weber, '10 San Carlos, CA English and Classical Studies
Individual attention from professors is my favorite thing about L&C. Even if a school like Harvard or Yale sounds good because it’s famous, there’s no guarantee that you will be happy or be able to get the one-on-one attention you can get here. I’ve had wonderful professors, especially in Introduction to Classical Studies and Latin.
I love to write stories and plays, or just spend time reading. I’m also involved in orchestra, the Historical Fencing Club, Gaming Society, French Club, and International Dance, so I definitely stay busy. I still have time to just talk and hang out with friends though.
Zoë Flanagan, '11 San Francisco, CA International Affairs
I think my favorite thing about L&C is that it has such a beautiful campus but is so close to such an amazing city. A college is not simply a school—it is a new home, and you have to like your area as much as you like the school. I’m an International Affairs major, but I’m minoring in Art with an emphasis on photography, so I love getting opportunities to take pictures around campus and Portland. I also love going to all of the diverse art galleries in the city, and plan to go on the London overseas program when I can. I like snowboarding too, and Mount Hood is just close enough to get some amazing powder days. There are opportunities for everything here.

I am VERY involved on campus--athletics have taken over my life to the point where I've actually decided not to go on an overseas program. That's okay, though, because I love it! I participate in Women's Swimming, SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee), and as a Student-Athlete Mentor, Student-Athlete Trainer, NW Conference SAAC member, and Admissions intern. In my small amounts of free time, I enjoy sleeping, shopping, exploring downtown, and spending time with my friends. There are a lot of things I love about L&C, but I think that the greatest thing is the diverse people I've met. Also, I like how passionate people are about their interests. I'm a senior this year, and I have to say that going to L&C was one of the best choices I've made.
