Admissions Alumni Volunteer Newsletter Summer 2007

Welcome to the Summer 2007 edition of the Lewis & Clark admissions alumni volunteer online newsletter! This newsletter comes to you four times per year, with news about campus happenings, admissions updates, and suggestions for what you can do to help the Lewis & Clark admissions effort.

Thank you for all of your help this year. With your assistance, the College has enrolled another excellent class of first-year and transfer students. As we celebrate the completion of a great admissions season, it is time to turn our attention to next year. The fall SEA newsletter will include more instructions on how you can get involved to help us attract our next great group of Pios!

We appreciate you keeping in touch with us and sharing your L&C stories and campus news with our prospective students.

Welcome to the newest Pios!

This year's applicant pool included more than 5300 students! This is the largest applicant pool in the history of the College. This fall we expect to welcome 510 of these outstanding students to Palatine Hill. To the satisfaction of all of us who recruited them (including you!), they are an interesting, diverse, and academically excellent group. Their academic profile at this point:

Mean High School GPA: 3.69
Mean SAT Composite: 1284
Mean ACT Composite: 28
76% from public high schools, 24% private
81% in top quarter of graduating class
15% U.S. students of color
6% International citizens

Who are the admissions alumni volunteers?

A SEA (Special Events Assistant) is a Lewis & Clark alum who helps the Admissions effort by doing things like sending congratulatory emails to admitted students and assisting at college fairs. SEAs also receive this newsletter four times a year, to keep them up-to-date on campus happenings and admissions activities around the country. ACEs (Alumni Coordinators for Enrollment) coordinate the efforts of the SEAs in their region. Check the ACE Directory to find the coordinator for your area. Contact the admissions counselor who coordinates admissions activities for your area.

How did I become a SEA?

You responded to a letter from the Admissions office requesting volunteers or indicated on an alumni survey that you were interested in volunteering for the Admissions office. If you have questions about the ACE/SEA program or would like to be removed from our mailing list, call the Admissions office at 800-444-4111 or email Erica L. Johnson '98.

Want to be an ACE?

We are looking for alumni in several areas throughout the country to serve as ACEs. ACEs are regional alumni coordinators. They serve as a main contact person for prospective students and other alumni who are eager to help. ACEs are provided training at a biannual ACE Conference (travel expenses are covered by our office) and receive regular communication and updates from the Admissions Office. The next ACE training conference is August 10-11, 2007.

How much of a time commitment does it take to be an ACE? What an ACE does really depends on how much time you have available, the specific needs of an area, and how many other alums are available to help. During some months ACE activities may take 2-5 hours and during other months the time commitment will be very limited. See the ACE Activities and Expectations timeline for more details. We are currently looking for ACEs in:

  • Anchorage, Alaska
  • Atlanta, Georgia
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Montana
  • New York City, New York
  • Phoenix, Arizona
  • Sacramento, California
  • Salt Lake City, Utah
  • Spokane, Washington

Contact Erica L. Johnson '98 if you are interested in becoming an ACE.

How can I get involved in my area?

This summer current students and alumni volunteers will be hosting summer send-offs to welcome new first-year and transfer students to L&C. To find out if a send-off is being held near your hometown (or if you are interested in attending a send-off) contact Brian Federico, assistant dean of admissions, at federico@lclark.edu.

Beginning in September, there are many more ways you can get involved in the College's admissions efforts. Members of the Admissions staff will be visiting high schools, offering interviews, and meeting with prospective students in cities throughout the country. We are always looking for volunteers to help with these activities. Since we can't be everywhere at once, we also need volunteers to cover college and fairs talk with prospective students and their families. Contact the admissions counselor for your area to find out how you can help!
