According to Ben Kalm, a junior majoring in chemistry and minoring in music, “Chemistry and music go really well together. They are both somewhat mathematical, even though it might not be obvious. And they are more than just notes on a page or chemical equations—you have to decipher what the symbols really mean.” Ben, who is from Utah, recently spent a week working on a community service project for Circle K, planning a Purim celebration as president of the Jewish Student Union, and rehearsing for the honor band’s trip to the College Band Directors’ Association conference.
All of Ben’s community service experience has reinforced his plan to become a pediatrician. He chose a liberal arts college because he felt it would give him the best background to reach his goals. “The most important skill in medicine is the ability to think logically and clearly. If something is going wrong, you have to be able to reason through why it is going wrong and then come up with a way to fix it.
“At Lewis & Clark, by taking classes in all different areas, I have been able to refine that most important facet of my education.”
