Academic leadership: As chair of the Student Academic Affairs Board, I’m really proud of the unique services this student-run board provides. SAAB makes recommendations on academic policy and sponsors tutoring and peer academic advising programs. It also awards student grants to fund research, conferences, performances, and visiting scholars. I believe it’s the only program of its kind in the country. We have some amazing students doing amazing things—like studying the effect of micro-credit loans on birth rates in India or researching the banjo in Ireland—thanks to SAAB funding. When people bring their experiences back to Lewis & Clark and present them at the International Affairs, Gender Studies, and Environmental Studies symposia, the whole campus benefits.

Getting philosophical: Initially I was attracted to philosophy to answer life’s big questions. I’m not sure whether I’ve gotten cynical or smarter, but I’ve come to realize that the chances of finding all the answers are nil. Now, through my classes and my leadership experiences, I’ve become interested in the practicality of philosophy and how it can be used in leadership development. That’s going to be the subject of my thesis, and, perhaps, my future.

A tale of two cities: Coming from a small town—population 150—I wanted to experience college in a larger town without having to live right in one. Lewis & Clark was ideal: It’s in Portland, and yet it feels separate, because we’re up on this hill. I really enjoy it here. In addition to the cultural opportunities in Portland, there’s plenty of activity on campus. I found I made friends quickly and felt comfortable here right away.
