Playing the field
Men’s soccer is one of several club sports offered at Lewis & Clark. Says team captain Henry Kilgore, a senior from Little Rock, Arkansas, “Some of our guys could have played varsity soccer at big schools, and some only played for a couple of years before joining the team. But everybody is here because they really want to be.”
Club sports are run by the students themselves, who form their own teams, find their own coaches, purchase equipment with financial assistance from the Associated Students of Lewis & Clark, and compete against other schools and city programs. In addition to men’s soccer, club sports include men’s lacrosse and ultimate Frisbee; women’s lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee, and spring indoor soccer; and coed teams in martial arts and sailing.
As well as playing soccer all four years at Lewis & Clark, Henry joined the lacrosse team in his sophomore year. “We didn’t have lacrosse in Little Rock,” he says, “so it was incredible fun to learn a new sport--and we won the championship in my first year!”
Henry enjoys club sports both for the physical workout--“When school gets tough, it’s great to get out on the field and run it off”--and for the social benefits--“You meet so many people,” he says. “It makes going to Lewis & Clark even more special when you’re invested in it as part of a team.”
