Neil Weare, junior
From: Santa Rita, Guam
Exploring: International Affairs
Travels on foot: I knew I wanted to run in college, and Lewis & Clark had a great cross country program and one of the nicest tracks in the conference. Plus, Portland is a great place to run.
Academic journeys: I’m committed to running, but I’m also committed to my classes, and at Lewis & Clark I can do both. The coaches are really flexible. They know the College is focused on academics, and they work around that. I’m a member of the Pamplin Society, which is a group of academic leaders chosen from each class in the school. We get together and support and challenge each other to accomplish great things. A lot of the members are really ambitious—we had a Rhodes scholar a few years ago. One of the best things about being in the society is seeing the examples that the seniors set and thinking, wow, that could be me!
Running with it: I took a gold medal in the 1997 Micronesian Games, and a bronze at the 1998 South Pacific Games. At Lewis & Clark I was an Academic All-American in cross country. My next goal is to run for Guam in the 2004 Olympics. Academically, I’ve become very interested in international affairs. I see myself working in policy or territorial issues, possibly for Guam. Through both athletic and academic support, Lewis & Clark has helped me to fulfill my potential.
