Housing

There are several housing options for AES students:

  • Many international students choose to live with an American host family. If you are interested in a homestay, contact ANDEO-International Homestays. ANDEO is a non-profit organization that finds American homes for international students. The monthly fee includes meals.
  • AES students may also rent a house or apartment off-campus. The AES office can send you a list of local apartments to get you started with your search.
  • Many AES students live on campus with American undergraduates. The residence hall rooms all have high-speed data lines and private phone lines: all halls have lounges, laundry facilities and kitchens.

Wherever you live, it's good to know that the Lewis & Clark campus is located in a quiet residential neighborhood in Portland, Oregon. Portland is a safe, secure place to live, work, and study. According to crime statistics released by the FBI in October 2005, Portland is one of the safest cities in the United States. AOL Travel and Leisure has also ranked Portland as the safest city in the USA.

Student Activities

RaftMany special activities and services are provided for AES students, including free airport pickup, orientation, friendship families, conversation groups, American cultural activities, tutoring referral, and academic advising. In addition, AES students are part of the Lewis & Clark community. AES students may use all campus facilities and take an active part in campus events such as the annual International Fair and off-campus activities, for example, College Outdoor programs.

College Outdoors

College Outdoors organizes exciting trips for Lewis & Clark students. These special trips to many parts of Oregon and other states include hiking in the mountains, rock climbing, cross-country skiing, whitewater river rafting, sea kayaking, and many other activities. It's a great way to meet friendly people and enjoy the fantastic scenery of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest!

Volunteering

AES students also make connections with the community outside the classroom by volunteering their time with local civic groups. There are many activities on and off campus that enrich student life and support language learning.

The Friendship Family Program

Kana & NewsomsThe Friendship Family Program at Lewis & Clark College was established more than thirty years ago and has been a very strong, ongoing link between the Portland community and the college. Through this program local families and international students have the opportunity to cultivate an appreciation of how others live and view the world.

The International Fair

IF BannerEvery spring the international students of Lewis & Clark share their native food, clothing, customs and dances with the Lewis & Clark community and people from all over Portland. In the morning, students present their culture through displays in country booths. In addition, students prepare and serve traditional dishes from their countries. In the afternoon, students present a fashion and talent show. The International Fair is unique in the Portland area and has been an annual event for over forty years.

Below are photos from our 2008 International Fair.

"Most people might say, school is the safest place. Others might say family is the safest, but what if you could find both things in a same place? And what will you call that? Being in the AES program was more than just studying for me. I lived the most wonderful time of life, beside wonderful people, younger and older, lovely teachers and so on. This moment has been noteworthy, and it will still be so for my entire life. AES is all I can recommend to everyone who like me, wish to have a home and a school in one place.

All the best to the future generations of AES,

Romeo Umulisa, Rwanda

"My name is Dolkar and I'm from Tibet. Lewis & Clark is a private, four-year institution enrolling about 1,750 students from the United States and other nations. The college has good services for international students, such as friendship families, conversation groups, international student club, annual international fair, movies, concerts, dance and sports teams. Lewis and Clark offers a great English program which has courses focusing on improvement of language skills and other subjects, for example, computers, and library skills. I recommend this college to you!"

"My name is Kyoko and I am from Japan where I graduated from a university. Because Lewis & Clark is a small private college with many international students, we can make many friends soon and easily. I believe you can study not only English but also many countries' culture. I love this college and am looking forward to seeing you here!"
