Update from the Chairman

September 26, 2006

Dear Albany Society,

I would like to take this opportunity to update you on the thinking of the Board of Directors. We're convinced that none of our programs will succeed unless we can get word of them out to all of our members, now some 2,000 alumni of the College who graduated fifty years ago or more.

We are committed to developing an effective communication system employing print, electronic, and phone communication. And given the high cost of producing and mailing printed material, we intend to rely heavily on electronics (email and the college Web site) and on our own phone committees to get the job done.

All of you can help. First, by letting other alumni know about the Lewis & Clark Web site and about the Quadrangle. It does little good for us to put information here if you folks out there don't read it because you don't know about it.

Second, by volunteering to be a member of the Albany Society phone committee. It's easy work, fun, and critical to the success of all our activities. All we ask is your willingness to call about 20 people, 6 or 8 times a year, to tell them about things that they'd probably enjoy participating in.

We do no fund-raising. At this writing, we have about 45 phoners; we think we need about 100 to make the program really effective. If you're willing to help, or if you would like more information, please call the alumni relations office at 503.768.7941.

Our current and planned programs include:

A prominent role in the development of the Alumni House in the Gatehouse

The Albany Society Breakfast in conjunction with the annual Golden Reunion to welcome the newest 50-year class to our group

Support for the Valentine's Luncheon for couples who have been married for 25 years or more

Albany Week, a back-to-the-class and snack shack experience for Albany Society members

    The annual summer barbecue

If you can think of anything else that you think we ought to be doing to strengthen our connections to the Lewis & Clark community, please let us know. We exist only to serve you.

Sincerely,
