Alumni Share Why They Reconnected With L&C

Each year new board members rotate onto positions on the board. Board members come from all over the county and from various graduating class years. Here's why some newly appointed board members chose to reconnect with the College.
  • Melvia Choy Kawashima '65.
"I'm grateful for the Lewis & Clark College years--formative and impressionable times for me when I traded tropical Hawaii for Pacific Northwest pine, gained 20 lbs from mashed potatoes and gravy, waitressed Sunday suppers without dropping the huge tray of dirty plates, traveled to Greece with Dr. John Anderson and company, bonded with friends, traditions, and husband Jim through memories clear as yesterday. I'm grateful to give back my time, talent, and treasure not to an institution, but to the faces of Lewis & Clark--the students, faculty, administrators, and alumni who live and celebrate the liberal arts life. Paraphrasing Thoreau,...'a natural community of neighbors will bear fruit.'"
  • Meredith Price ‘07.
"Lewis & Clark is at a significant turning point in its history, and I believe the only way to guarantee that Lewis & Clark is successful in the future is to critically, strategically, and thoughtfully engage alumni (which has not happened in years past). I also believe the link between student life and the alumni should strengthen. The phrase, "Once a Pio, Always a Pio" rings true for me personally, and if the College listens and nurtures the active, engaged, and forward thinking student body, every student that graduates from the College will join this life-long community. I also believe in questioning the status quo and I want to personally contribute to the solutions necessary to to increase alumni engagement and create a holistic campus community."
  • Francis Dillow '68.
"Little did I know when I entered Lewis & Clark College as a freshman in the fall of 1964, that I had joined a new family which would shape the rest of my life. The professors from whom I learned so much, the friends I made and have kept for a lifetime, the experiences I encountered, all created a solid foundation for everything I have done since. Professors like Don Balmer, Jack Crampton, Bill Stafford, Vern Rutsula, Karlin Capper-Johnson all have been great lifelong teachers. Even those who are no longer with us live on in our own lives, and frame how we interact with others.
As I have talked with today's students, I realize that the same spirit still guides and directs the college family today. It was in Don Balmer's Con Law class that I first encountered the famous remark of Webster in the Dartmouth College case describing his alma mater to the Supreme Court, when he summed up saying, in effect, 'she is but a small school, but there are those of us who love her!' One of the many things I learned at Lewis and Clark that makes it such an honor to serve on the Board of Alumni. "
  • Lynn Roumagoux '59
"My acceptance of a BofA position fills a need to give back to the college where I passed from youth to become a better adult. Many of the faculty, coaches, and staff guided my growth. Eldon Fix, Volney Faw, Joe Houston, Hester Turner, John Braun, and Dr. Frisbie became mentors, and, more importantly, friends. Outside of the academics, Otto Sacks provided an example of excellence. The lawns and gardens needed special care to meet the high standards he set for the his college. Three years of his supervision during the summer and vacation sessions gave me time to meet his goals and earn his confidence."
