Welcome to Lewis & Clark College's eNews, a monthly update of news and events at Lewis & Clark College. We send eNews to alumni, parents, and friends of the campus community. College NewsForensics debate team earns national honorsLewis & Clark College's forensics teams took first and third place in a national competition sponsored by the National Parliamentary Debate Association. The tournament took place March 17-20 at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. The competition brought together 220 teams from 80 colleges and universities. Lewis & Clark named one of 81 "Colleges With a Conscience"Lewis & Clark College is one of the nation's best colleges fostering social responsibility and public service, according to The Princeton Review and Campus Compact. Lewis & Clark is one of 81 institutions in 33 states that The Princeton Review commends and features in its forthcoming book, "Colleges With A Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement" (Random House/Princeton Review Books, 2005). International Affairs Symposium focuses on global epidemicsScholars and experts will discuss the growing problem of global disease during Lewis & Clark College's 43rd annual International Affairs Symposium. The three-day conference, April 4-6, is titled "States of Emergency: Exploring the Reality of Global Disease." All events are free and open to the public. All symposium events will be held in the Council Chamber of Templeton Student Center. John R. Howard Hall dedication celebrates campus' sustainability effortsLewis & Clark College hopes to turn green into gold with John R. Howard Hall. The new 50,000-square-foot academic building is the latest example of the college's commitment to sustainable building practices. It follows other "green" construction on campus, including Wood Hall at Lewis & Clark Law School and three apartment-style residence halls on the undergraduate campus. The U.S. Green Building Council is considering Howard Hall for Gold compliance certification. Howard Hall will be dedicated in a ceremony on Earth Day--Friday, April 22--at 4:30 p.m.
College is first in Oregon to sign Talloires Declaration for sustainable futureLewis & Clark College will take another step in environmental leadership when it becomes the first Oregon college to sign the international Talloires Declaration of the Association of University Leaders for a Sustainable Future. Tom Hochstettler, Lewis & Clark's president, will sign the document on Friday, April 22, at 3:30 p.m. in Howard Hall. The signing coincides with the 35th anniversary of Earth Day.
