Senior Adan Vielma's project exploring how federally funded research has transformed American life has won a national video contest. Professor's Findings Call Key Evolutionary Theory Into Question

Evolutionary biologist Paulette Bierzychudek has published a report reconsidering a theory that has influenced scientists and researchers for decades. During a 20-year field study in the Mojave Desert, Bierzychudek and her research collaborator found that the distribution of certain flower varieties was the result of natural selection rather than chance. Their conclusion challenges prevailing assumptions about genetic drift. Read a review of their findings at Science or the full report at Evolution.

With the best cross country performance by a Pioneer in more than 40 years, senior Amanda Phillips earned All-American honors at the NCAA Division III Cross Country National Championships on November 17. The Phoenix, Oregon, native completed the six-kilometer race with a time of 21:51, placing her 19th in a field of 280 runners. Read more about Amanda’s race.
