Happy New Year and welcome to Lewis & Clark College's eNews, College NewsProfessor Keller Autumn Helps Pioneer Gecko ResearchGecko feet may hold the key to the development of synthetic self-cleaning adhesives, according to Keller Autumn, associate professor of biology at Lewis & Clark College. Professor Autumn co-authored a study that may open the door to tape that can be reused endlessly, robotic rovers that run swiftly over the Martian surface or even fumble-free football gloves. L&C community addresses tsunami reliefThe world was stunned by the devastating consequences of the Southeast Asia earthquake and tsunami. Images of casualties, injuries, and property destruction have convinced many to assist with the tsunami relief efforts. As Peter Cookson, dean of the graduate school, remarks, "We need to break with routine and embrace a world in deep need of healing and solidarity." College events reflect upon Martin Luther King Jr.Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. visited Lewis & Clark College in November 1961 and talked about the future of integration. More than four decades later, the campus will reflect on, discuss and celebrate the civil rights leader's life and legacy in observation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 17. The full schedule of activities includes a lecture by alumnus Jaiya John '89, founder and executive director of Soul Water Rising, as well as a variety of workshops, panel discussions, and music. Traveling exhibit comes to PortlandLewis & Clark College's traveling exhibition, titled The Literature of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, has opened at the Oregon Historical Society. The exhibit, drawn from the College's unmatched library of expedition-related literature acquired over the past 20 years, makes its only appearance in Portland following a national tour of selected sites. On January 23 and 25, President Thomas Hochstettler invites alumni and parents to the Oregon Historical Society for a lecture and reception, featuring a presentation by Professor Stephen Dow Beckham, curator of the exhibit. College mourns loss of Ray Warren '65 M.A.T '71G. Ray Warren died peacefully on December 19, 2004 of cancer that had metastasized to his liver. Ray was a vibrant member of our College community, and his legacy at Lewis & Clark College will be remembered for years to come. Ray began his work at the College in 1987 as an Associate Dean of Admissions, and was named Associate Dean of Students and Director of Ethnic Student Services in 1992.
