College NewsAlumni Weekend 2006 schedule announcedEnjoy a variety of reunions, homecoming events, and Alumni College "classes" on campus October 5-8, 2006 for Alumni Weekend. Classes ending in 1 or 6 (1981, 1986, etc.) will be celebrating milestone reunions and be able to participate in special social activities. Latvian jurist speaks at law commencementLatvian judge Anita Usacka, one of 18 judges to serve on the International Criminal Court in The Hague, addressed the graduates at Lewis & Clark Law School's commencement on Saturday, May 27. "Judge Usacka's career has spanned from the Soviet era through Latvian independence and service on the Constitutional Court to the International Criminal Court with an unwavering commitment to the rule of law and to social justice," said James L. Huffman, law school dean and Erskine Wood Sr. Professor of Law. "We are honored to welcome her as our commencement speaker for 2006." New ethnic studies minor offeredLewis & Clark College will offer a new minor in ethnic studies beginning in fall 2006. "Exploring how ethnic and racial identities have historically developed is crucial for understanding today’s increasingly multicultural and interconnected world," said Elliott Young, associate professor of history and director of the ethnic studies program. "Only through a rigorous, historically based investigation of race and ethnicity can we begin to contemplate issues arising from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the appalling incarceration rates of African Americans in U.S. prisons, the national debate on immigration, or U.S. involvement in Iraq," he said. Two earn prestigious Goldwater scholarshipsErin Currie '07, a double major in biochemistry and biology, and Jessica Minnier '07, a math major, have each received a 2006 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. The Lewis & Clark College students are two of 323 students nationwide to receive the $7,500 award. Since 1995, more than a dozen other Lewis & Clark students have been named Goldwater scholars. Goldwater scholars are selected on the basis of academic merit.
