College NewsPresident Hochstettler's remarks at the 2005 CAS commencementOn May 8th, graduating seniors, family, friends, staff and faculty gathered to witness the 133rd commencement of Lewis & Clark College. While spirits may have been dampened by the need to move the procession indoors, the audience was soon reinvigorated by the wonderful remarks of President Tom Hochstettler. Culminating in a spirited charge to the graduating class, President Hochstettler's remarks helped coalesce four special years into a meaningful day of celebration.
Tristan Nuñez '05 spotlighted in OregonianIn four years at Lewis & Clark College, Tristan Nuñez has organized rallies, brought lecturers to campus, interned with a conservation group, won national scholarships, co-edited a campus journal, pursued a double major and grappled with how to reconcile free trade with protections for workers and the environment. Julio De Paula named new Dean of the CollegeJulio C. de Paula, professor of chemistry and director of the Marian E. Koshland Integrated Natural Sciences Center at Haverford College, has been named as the new dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Lewis & Clark College. The appointment follows a nationwide search. De Paula takes up his post at Lewis & Clark on August 1. Humanitarian Roxane White '85 highlighted in Rocky Mountain NewsIn just 18 months running the Denver Department of Human Services, Roxane White has shaken things up, changing everything from the layout of the lobby to the way employees answer the phone. As chairwoman of the city's Commission to End Homelessness, White also has emerged as the leading advocate for the homeless in Denver. Phil Akers heads institutional advancementPhilip J. Akers has joined Lewis & Clark College as vice president for institutional advancement. His appointment followed a national search. Akers was most recently vice president for university advancement at Eastern Washington and president of that institution’s foundation. Akers started at the College on May 2.
