College NewsYeager named to head athleticsClark S. Yeager, assistant to the provost at Kutztown University, has been named as the new director of physical education and athletics at Lewis & Clark College. Yeager has served as the athletic director at both Kutztown University and California State University at Chico and coached swimming at Chico. Yeager will bring more than 40 years of athletic experience with him to Lewis & Clark when he takes up the post on July 1. Dougharty named dean of studentsW. Houston Dougharty, associate dean for student services at the University of Puget Sound, has been named the new dean of students at Lewis & Clark College following a national search. He will begin his new job on July 17. "Houston Dougharty received ringing endorsements from students, faculty, and staff alike during his campus visit," said Jane Atkinson, vice president and provost. "All of us valued his extensive experience, his personal warmth, and his demonstrated gift for bridging differences, building community, and fostering connection." Vance named to head business and financeCarl B. Vance, vice president for finance and administration at Linfield College, has been named vice president for business and finance and treasurer of Lewis & Clark College. He will assume his duties on August 1. "Carl Vance has combined innovative proposals with pragmatic thinking in responding to many of the financial and business challenges that face institutions of higher education today," said Lewis & Clark College President Thomas J. Hochstettler. Graduate school commencement setWilliam F. Schultz, executive director of Amnesty International USA, will address graduates at the commencement ceremony for Lewis & Clark College's Graduate School of Education and Counseling on Sunday, June 4. "William Schulz has been a powerful force as an advocate for human rights and social justice causes in the world," said Peter W. Cookson Jr., dean of the graduate school. "His commitment to global citizens and critical issues matches our vision at the graduate school and how we teach our students. We are honored to welcome him as our commencement speaker for 2006."
