'Three Cups of Tea' Author Addresses Graduating SeniorsHumanitarian Greg Mortenson, co-author of a best-selling book about his efforts to build schools—and peace—in impoverished mountain regions of Central Asia, addressed graduating seniors at the 136th annual commencement of the College of Arts and Sciences. Six L&C Seniors Win Fulbright AwardsA record number of Lewis & Clark seniors have earned prestigious honors from the Fulbright Program. The awards include five international teaching assistantship positions and one research grant, which the students will undertake in Russia, Germany, Indonesia, Thailand, and Chile. Though the recipients represent diverse academic programs and interests, they share a commitment to international education and engagement. Students Provide Aid for Brazilian OrphansThe most fragile residents of an impoverished Brazilian community will receive an influx of support this summer from four Lewis & Clark students and grants totaling $12,500. Sixty children and adolescents, many of whom were abandoned out of economic desperation, inhabit the humble Criamar orphanage in Ceilândia, Brazil, where the Lewis & Clark students will live and work this summer. Student Wins Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute HonorDante Perez is one of 32 college students from across the country to earn an internship with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. Perez, a junior international affairs major, will spend this summer in Washington, D.C., working in a congressional office and honing his public leadership skills. Professors Offer Political Analysis of Youth Vote in OregonJohn Callahan, Morgan Odell Professor of Humanities, and Robert Eisinger, associate professor of political science, recently offered their expert insight to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer on the exciting injection of youth participation in Oregon politics this election season.
