College NewsAward winning author addresses undergraduate commencementNovelist, short story writer, essayist, and cartoonist Charles Johnson, whose book "Middle Passage" earned the 1990 National Book Award, will address Lewis & Clark College's 134th commencement on Sunday, May 7. Approximately 440 students will have completed their bachelor of arts degrees during the 2005-06 academic year. A majority of them are expected to participate in commencement. Records of Distinction Honors BanquetVera Katz will be the keynote speaker for this fundraising event to honor five distinguished alumni from the five Programs of the Graduate School for their service to children and community. This year's honorees are Vanessa J. Bunker for Educational Leadership, Ian M. Martin for School Counseling, Glenn C. Maynard for Counseling Psychology, Jeffrey W. Rose for Teacher Education, and Leslie E.C. Strobel for School Psychology. Loren named interim dean of law schoolLydia Loren, a law professor at Lewis & Clark Law School, has been named as the school's interim dean. President Thomas J. Hochstettler announced the appointment on Monday, March 20. Loren becomes the first woman to lead the law school and assumes the post on July 1, 2006. Hochstettler made the appointment after consultation with members of the law school community. She succeeds James L. Huffman, Erskine Wood Sr. Professor of Law, who announced his return to the classroom at the law school after having served for 13 years as dean. Physics professor Thomas Olsen selected as Teacher of the YearStudents at Lewis & Clark College have chosen Thomas Olsen, associate professor of physics, as teacher of the year. The selection was announced Wednesday, April 19, during a ceremony on campus. Student and alumni letters submitted to nominate Olsen praised his approachable and engaging teaching style. "He cares a great deal about his students, that they learn, that they are successful, and that they are living a good life," wrote one student.
