Department Resources
The department possesses a diverse array of modern biological facilities and equipment. These include:
- Scanning electron microscope (SEM)
- High-resolution oxygen analyzer
- Modern, climate controlled greenhouse
- Natural areas around campus
Additionally, the department has several fully equipped molecular laboratories for teaching and research, including equipment for gene cloning and polymerase chain reaction.
In addition, students and faculty in the Natural Sciences at Lewis and Clark have access to our fully-equipped Natural Science Shop for mechanical and electronic construction, troubleshooting, and repair.
Oregon abounds in natural areas that provide ideal sites for a variety of kinds of field research. For example, Tryon Creek State Park, which is within walking distance from the Lewis and Clark campus, is the location for student-designed investigations of invasive species and of water quality in Biology 141. Students in Biology 221 take field trips to rocky intertidal zones and estuaries on the Oregon Coast and in Southern Washington. The H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains is the site of investigations into forest ecology in Biology 335.
