A Forest in the City
Teaching the Natural History of Portland
Immerse yourself in Portland's natural resource, Tryon Creek Natural Area, during this four-day course for classroom teachers. Learn how to integrate the natural spaces around your school and the natural world of Portland into the classroom. Three themes will guide this discovery process: learning about local natural history, gaining skills to develop outdoor curriculum, and exploring current theory of place-based education. The class meets at Tryon Creek State Park in the nature building and the surrounding area.
Participants will learn: - Basic identification of plants common to Portland's natural spaces.
- The local natural history of the Upper Willamette Valley.
- How to use nature journaling as a method to support sciencetfic inquiry and the development of observation skills.
- Child management techniques for outdoor activities.
- Special techniques for developing outdoor curriculum.
- How to develop curriculum and activities focused on common curriculuar goals using school yard resources.
