Ecoscapes: Costa Rica
Information Session: Weds., 12/10/2008, 7 PM to 8 PM Rogers Hall Room 108 (South Campus)
All interested persons are invited to an Information Night to learn more about this wonderful opportunity to experience Costa Rican culture and tropical ecology.
Trip dates: July 24 - August 10, 2009
Experience the tropical landscapes of Costa Rica, learning to appreciate its diversity through the perspective of the Costa Rican people. Compare and contrast the natural history, culture, and approaches to conservation of Costa Rica to Oregon's. Journey from ocean shores and mangrove swamps across volcanic mountain ranges to contrasting forest habitats, staying at field stations and witnessing community-level conservation efforts. Observe commercial agriculture, meet families through home stays, and learn to think of biodiversity itself as communal property essential to sustainable economic practices and the equitable distribution of wealth. Find opportunities to immerse yourself in Spanish language.
Information from last year (2008)
Greetings,
12 persons have indicated "strong interest"; we can accommodate up to 18 as we kayak through mangroves, join watershed restoration work, hike tropical forest trails, and learn about Costa Rican family life.
The Spring Semester Information Session will be on Monday, January 28, 2008 at 7:15pm-8:30pm. Bldg #83 Rogers Hall 108. It's certainly not too late to inquire! Please contact me to learn more.
Our program in Costa Rica is hosted by the Municipality of San Isidro and Project Campanario on the La Osa Penninsula. We divide our time between host families and field stations, with a two-day visit to the Boruca Indigenous Reserve. Departure on July 18; return on August 4. In the field, we are typically joined by a number of Costa Ricans, with classes held in both Spanish and English. Fluency in Spanish, however, is not a requirement for participation.
If interested, please email me directly and I will keep you up to date.
