Place Based Education NW:
Giving Students a Reason to Learn
This four-day institute will give teachers, school administrators, and community members an opportunity to become familiar with the possibilities, principles, and practices of place-based education. This approach to teaching and learning directs teachers and students to local culture, history, natural resource issues, economics, and community processes as the basis for a proportion of students’ educational experiences. Teaching in this way benefits both students and their communities. Students encounter learning opportunities that are personally engaging and valued by others. And communities gain from the imagination, energy, and commitment of their youngest citizens.
The institute will include presentations from educators who have adopted place-based approaches, opportunities to try out different practices, visits to community partners who can help teachers integrate place-based education into their own classrooms, and the chance to develop a locally focused unit to be taught during the coming academic year. A follow-up meeting will be scheduled for the spring of 2009 to give institute participants a chance to hear about and learn from one another’s experience putting these ideas into practice in their own schools.
