for International Studies and an Abramowitz
fellow at Stanford’s Hoover Institution.

Guest speaker: Erin Brockovich Ellis, the
brash and gutsy law firm file clerk whose
story inspired the film Erin Brockovich, starring
Julia Roberts. Ellis investigated the
impact of a toxic chemical that had leaked
into the groundwater of Hinkley, California,
from Pacific Gas and Electric’s holding
tanks. Her research led to a multimilliondollar
settlement with the California-based
utility.

Guest speaker: M. Brinton Lykes, associate
dean of Boston College’s Lynch School of
Education. She spends much of her time in
Central America, Chile, Argentina, and
South Africa, where she studies the transitions
and aftereffects of war. In the United
States, she focuses on ways to help urban
immigrant middle school children deal with
community violence.
