In Memoriam

1930s

Weyona O. Fellows Dodele '37, October 12, 2002, age 88. A resident of Albany, she taught for several schools in the area and married William in 1939. They were together for nearly 50 years until he died in 1987. She is survived by a son, two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

1940s

Rev. Harry Boyd Hampton '43, October 18, 2002, age 93. He ministered at Presbyterian churches in Reedville, Portland, Happy Valley, Springwater, Cloverdale, Pacific City, and Roseburg. Hampton also led young boys in Bible study and was a camp counselor for the churches he served. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, four children, 13 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Louis Kahn '47, August 22, 2002, age 80. Kahn cofounded Bellevue Community College, where he was the first dean of instruction, and also served as planning director, chair of the psychology department, and psychology teacher. In 1942, Kahn joined the U.S. Army, and as a second lieutenant, was infantry unit commander in the battle for Guadalcanal. Before his tenure at the college, he was a teacher and administrator in the Bellevue School District. He is survived by his wife, Lee, three children, and five grandchildren.

John M. Winkler J.D. '48, August 26, 2002, age 82. Winkler was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II. Early in his career, Winkler was active in Young Democrats and worked in Washington, D.C., in the office of chief counsel to the Office of Price Stabilization. He returned to Oregon and, after many years in private practice, retired in 1991.

1950s

Henry Wilson "Harry" Devlin J.D. '50, November 13, 2002, age 85. Devlin worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1938 and joined the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1942. He was a Yamhill County deputy district attorney for five years and later joined Knott, Cummins, & Devlin. He was Yamhill County Circuit judge for the 12th Judicial District from 1977 to 1989, when he retired.

Edward F. McDowell '50, August 8, 2002, age 82. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a personal property appraiser for Multnomah County after graduating from the College. McDowell was past president of the Native Plant Society of Oregon. He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Jean Fulton '43, three sons, three daughters, 17 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Harold T. Potts '50, October 12, 2002, age 78. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Europe during World War II. After graduating from the College, Potts was a purchasing agent for Pacific Power & Light. He is survived by his wife, Delores, three daughters, and six grandchildren.

Alan R. "Bob" Libby J.D. '51, May 22, 2002, age 78. Libby was born in Portland and graduated from Benson Polytechnic High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After earning his J.D., he moved to Bend in 1956, then returned to Portland in 1964. He held several positions at U.S. Bank before retiring.

George D. Ward, '51, December 10, 2002, age 85. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, then married and attended the College. He helped establish Habitat for Humanigy of the West Valley in Sun City, Arizona. During his 27 years with the organization, he helped build more than 140 homes. Ward and his wife had twins, a boy and a girl. His daughter, Nancy J. Ward, graduated from Lewis & Clark in 1973.

Paul S. Hybertsen J.D. '52, November 19, 2002, age 81. Hybertsen was born in Portland and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After earning his law degree, he was an attorney in private practice in Portland until 1986.

Frank E. Imper '52, October 1, 2002, age 78. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Atlantic and Pacific theatres. After graduating from the College, Imper was the comptroller for RTE and Northwest Textbook Depository. He was a Little League and Babe Ruth baseball coach and a member of the board for Mount Hood Kiwanis Camp. He is survived by his wife, Beverly, two sons, and four grandchildren. His daughter, Christine, died in 1966.

Florence M. Berg '54, October 8, 2002, age 94. She was a Navy Wave during World War II, and worked as a bookkeeper for the Veterans Administration after graduating from the College.

Paul O'Hollaren J.D. '54, May 2002, age 74. Many Oregon lawyers knew him best as a cofounding member of the Professional Liability Fund, the self-insurance program for lawyers operated by the Oregon State Bar.

Arthur "Bill" Sheasly Jr. '55, August 17, 2002, age 73. For his service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Sheasly received two Purple Hearts. In 1953 he married Patricia Lane '53; they later divorced. He worked as an insurance adjuster and a customs inspector. Sheasly is survived by his weife, Bobbi Ritschard, three children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Ellis Eli Gerdes J.D. '59, August 31, 2002. Gerdes served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After earning his law degree, he worked as a deputy city attorney in Portland and conducted technical research for the Portland Police Bureau. Later, he had a private practice for many years in Portland, before retiring in 1990.

1960s

Janice E. Daly Worden '60, October 12, 2002, age 64. She was an elementary school librarian, a photo librarian for the Oregon Historical Society, and a travel agent. Worden is survived by her husband, Raymond, two sons, and four grandchildren. A third son, Mark, died in the early 1960s.

Frank W. Mowry J.D. '62, March 25, 2002, age 75. During World War II, Mowry served in the U.S. Navy. After earning his J.D., he worked in private practice in Portland 21 years. He lived in Canby for 20 years, before moving to Woodburn in 1991.

Donna Irene Lane Nelson '63, November 28, 2002, age 61. She was a teacher and also an active hiker, mountain climber, and motorcycle rider.

Elizabeth Patterson Mitchelmore '66, December 27, 2002. She is survived by her husband, Jim Mitchelmore '65.

1970s

Craig E. Breese '74, August 14, 2002, age 49. He was an Elders Quorum Counselor and Sunday school president in the Highland First Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a counselor in the University Ward Bishopric. Breese practiced family medicine and obstetrics and gynecology in Vancouver, Washington; Auburn, California; and Pocatello, Idaho, where he was associated with the Pocatello Regional Medical Center Women's Health Clinic. He was a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Breese is survived by his wife, Debra, and his son and daughter.

Richard Alan Carlson J.D. '75, May 2002, age 72. A Korean War veteran who served in the U.S. Navy, Carlson worked in advertising until he obtained his law degree. After receiving his J.D., Carlson practiced law for 10 years before joining the U.S. Postal Service, where he worked until his retirement in 1994.

1980s

Marylee A. Lowry J.D. '86, September 7, 2002, age 57. Lowry graduated cum laude from the law school and interned for the Oregon Supreme Court. In 1987, she joined what is now Davis Wright Tremaine, where she practiced in estate planning and nonprofits until 2001, when her fight with breast cancer caused her to take early retirement.

2000s

Ashana Chenoa '00, January 2, 2003, age 24. She lived in Portland and died in an automobile accident. The College's theatre department held a memorial service for Chenoa on January 29 in Fir Acres Theatre. Originally from Anchorage, Alaska, she is survived by her mother, Judith Anderson; father, Richard Brodsky; brother, Brendan Anderson-Brodsky; and grandmother, Ada Anderson.
